Almost 20 years later. FEAR is still best horror game of all time?

Replaying FEAR currently. one of those timeless ageless game that I have to return playing over and over. its mechanically perfect game with best combat in any game in history and best AI ever too.

none of Resident evil, silent hill, dead space or even Alan wake is anything compare to this. RE4-R is also masterpiece but still its action game.

FEAR is also only horror game that blend horror and action perfectly.

cant believe 20 year old game is so good on combat prespective that no game surpassed it yet (Doom and Doom Eternal comes close though).

C'mon Ghost come up with something original. FEAR isn't the best horror game, heck it's not even the best first-person shooter.

original FEAR on PC is what that only matters. you played inferior consolized sequel and inferior port.

Alien Isolation and RE7 are great horror games.

Let's end this Ghost, I paid for all 3 games, we both know you didn't, and to further bury you, your PC can't play the Witcher 3 in anything other than potato mode, so don't talk about consoles 🤣

If we're talking about of all time, meaning ask platforms, then these games are nothing compared to Sinistar arcade. These jump scare titles don't hold a candle to the terror that game made you feel.

FEAR still age pefectly well. Silent hill now dated.

FEAR the best horror game of all time? It's probqbly not even in my top 25. To each their own, but come on. Horror games are hard to tack down through classification though, so I guess it would depend on your definition of a horror game.

alien isolation. not a shooter but fantastic stealth mechanics and a ridiculously good atmosphere. far more of a pure horror game than fear was

because this old relic have better combat and AI than any modern game.

Best horror game is Silent Hill 3.....or Haunting Ground. SH3 really put the "horror" in SH.

Good game but wouldn’t say that it’s the best horror game. Would place a bunch of other games such as the Resident Evil games, Dead Space, etc. as being better.

Great shooter, good game, terrible horror game.

FEAR is pretty great and I'd love to see a return to some of those game mechanics (where has slomo gone!?! Why did we favor cover and not slo-mo?!) but FFS let's not put it on the pedestal.

For starters:

• Dead Space: amputations, zero-g, powers.
• Amnesia: fear mechanic
• Doom 3, and many others: flashlight use is necessary
• Alien vs Predator 2: playing as the monster/s
• Metro, STALKER: radiation, exploration components
• Sunless Sea: emergent horror gameplay, fear of unknown while exploring, negative choice and consequence mechanic
• Dredge: really fun fishing mechanics, story-telling that isn't overly cinematic or immersion breaking, "relaxing horror" mechanic that isn't terrifying but more kind of constantly spooky and mildly stressful.
• Alien: Isolation: really good AI, does a good job of dropping you into a "normal person" (as opposed to a soldier) perspective and forcing you to evade and hide.
• Barotrauma: survival horror co-op, role mechanics (captain, soldier, mechanic, etc), emergent gameplay, use of sonar while essentially piloting a submarine blind
• UBOAT: realistic depiction of serving on a submarine during WWII is TERRIFYING holy shit, it's not traditional horror but man it is scary.

That's just a few I can think of off the top of my head.

FEAR is good. But it's an action game with a horror theme. I wouldn't call it a horror game in the vein of Resident Evil or Amnesia or even Doom for that matter.

I do enjoy FEAR's story, though, I thought they did a good job.

but its outdated now while FEAR after 20 years later still ageless. still play perfect.

I remember that game not being scary. It had a few obvious jump scares, thats about it.

Extraction point was scary.

lol, no. It's nowhere close to the best. But it's one of the few good horror FPS.

I can tell you that playing Ravenholm level in HL2 made by ass way more tense than anything in FEAR when i played them both for the first time. Being able to slow down time in FEAR makes it way too safe to be tense/scarry.

It's not scary at all

It's been a while since I played fear, damn. I didn't beat the game, but it was generally decent. I think RE2 was a pretty scary game, hearing Mr.X footsteps is just traumatizing.

Even if it isn't even remotely scary - Resident Evil 4 is the greatest horror game of all time.

The original Resident Evil 1 + 2, Silent Hill and Until Dawn are the best horror games. I would call Fear a shooter, not a true horror game.

Bloodborne still best horror game.
