Cities: Skylines, the SimCity-inspired city-building game, has reached yet another sales milestone. The game, released March 10 for PC, Mac, and Linux, has now sold more than 1 million copies. By comparison, EA's latest SimCity game, which launched in 2013, has sold more than 2 million units as of July 2013.
Cities: Skylines sold 250,000 copies in 24 hours and reached 500,000 units in its first week. According to Fredrik Wester, the CEO of publisher Paradox Interactive, the game still has legs.
“We continue to be amazed at just how players have embraced Cities: Skylines," he said in a statement. "The game is still selling at a steady pace, which is remarkable for a game that has been on sale for well over a month. Once again, we want to thank everyone that has supported and continues to support this game."
When Cities: Skylines sold 250,000 copies on its first day, the game became Paradox's fastest-selling game of all time.
Paradox also mentioned that Cities: Skylines players have already created an incredible 33,000 mods for the game on Steam Workshop, including those that riff on Grand Theft Auto V and Flight Simulator, among others. In addition, the game's current average concurrent player figure is 21,000.
Cities: Skylines was developed by Colossal Order, the team behind Cities in Motion and Cities in Motion 2.
In GameSpot's 8/10 Cities: Skylines review, real-life mayor Brett Todd wrote: "Right now, there is no better way to take a peek at life as a mayor without filing your papers to run for office in the real world."
Meanwhile, SimCity developer Maxis Emeryville has shut down, though support for SimCity and The Sims 4 will continue.
