Right before I went to bed last night, I decided to check out the score of the Jazz-Warriors game. There was just under three minutes left and it was a five point game, in Utah's favor. As tired as I was, I decided to see it through to the end.
The end of the fourth quarter was very exciting. There was lots of back-and-forth until finally, after Golden State came back to tie and then take the lead, Utah's Deron Williams drove inside for the game-tieing layup to send the game into OT.
The Jazz ran away with it in OT and took a 2-0 lead in the series. Part of the reason why is because of Derek Fisher.
Fisher took a charter flight from New York to Utah to attend the game and didn't arrive until almost the end of the third quarter. He didn't stretch or practice at all and he still jumped in to play in the fourth quarter. He had to rather big plays: he put enough pressure on Baron Davis to make him step out of bounds and he hit the three-pointer that sealed the Warrior's fate. This in and of itself is pretty amazing, but the fact that he did this and the reason why he was late to the game makes it even more amazing.
Fisher's daughter had surgery on her eye in NY because she has a rare form of cancer that is hard to detect. The surgery was successful and allowed Fisher to take a charter flight to the game. The fact that he was able to be there as his daughter was operated on, fly across the country from New York to Utah and then step in the game and do what he did is unbelievable. It took a lot for him to be able to leave his family in NY to join his family on the court in Utah. Derek Fisher deserved this game and this win. Here's hoping he gets many more of them.
