The 2007 NFL draft has come and gone. It was a long weekend, but it was a fun one, too. I do have one issue in particular though. That would be Miami Dolphins first round pick, #9 overall.
Let me start off by saying that I am in no way a Dolphins fan. I have actually hated them for a good part of my life and am just starting to come around. With that said, I was shocked and disgusted by the Dolphins pick.
I had no doubt in my mind that the Dolphins were going to draft Brady Quinn at #9. They wanted a young, franchise QB and Quinn fell into their laps. They didn't even have to trade up for him! So, when Commissioner Goodell announce the pick "With the 9th overall selection in the 2007 NFL draft, the Miami Dolphins select Ted Ginn, Jr., WR, OSU" my jaw hit the floor. I was in total shock, as were most people, Dolphin's fans or not.
The pick made no sense. He was chosen way too high. They could have traded down, picked up a few extra picks and still drafted him at a more reasonable spot. But no, they thought spending the #9 pick on a raw WR who many experts say can never be a true #1 would be a good idea.
That isn't what got to me the most, though. What got to me is when they showed Cam Cameron, in his rookie HC debut for the Dolphins, announcing the pick to the draft party and giving his reasoning for it. They drafted Ginn because "he has known Ginn's family for 10 years and watched Ginn grow up" and "he will be a great return man". First of all, if my team had a top 10 pick and drafted a player too high with it because the HC knows his family well, I would blow a gasket. If that isn't bad enough, to then say he will be a great return man? They just spent a #9 pick on a return man? Ugh...the boos were much deserved. For Cam's sake, I hope this isn't the start of a bad career in Miami. They better hope Quinn is a bust and Ginn lights opposing teams or this could go down as one of the biggest draft blunders ever.
