In Entertainment Peter Schaefer traded Entry Tools Rate This Entry

GM Brian Murray did a great job at unloading salary and getting another depth player up front in Shean Donovan. It's expected that Donovan, a career role player, will be slotted along side of McAmmond and either Brian McGrattan or, as I expect, Dany Bois on the 4th line. Donovan will most likely kill penalties with either McAmmond or Fisher (to replace Schaefer).

Our PK units line up as follows:

1. Vermette-Kelly (quickly turning into this decade's Maltby-Draper combo)
2. McAmmond-Alfredsson/Donovan
3. Fisher-Donovan/Alfredsson

I like this move up front but I am also intrigued by it for a few reasons.

1. There have been numerous reports that Schaefer actually asked to be traded a few times over the course of the season.

Why would he do this?

He just signed a huge 4-year contract the previous off-season which means he was willing to stay in Ottawa until he was 34 years old. Which hockey player in the right mind, getting 2 line minutes, with spot duty on the PP and a regular shift on the PK actually WANT to leave a Stanley Cup contender?

2. What will Murray do with the extra money?

Most people are inclined to believe that the extra money will go towards signing our RFAs (Kelly, Schubert and Emery). However other possibilities exist, including signing Heatley or Spezza long-term, bringing in a UFA of the likes of Martin Gelinas or Martin Lapointe or bringing a slightly larger contract in return for Martin Gerber. A Gerber for Derek Morris or a Gerber + Brian Lee for Adam Foote trades seem plausible.

What everyone can agree on is this trade brought more flexibility to the management. In a salary cap world, flexibility is often the difference between negotiating (with your RFAs and other teams) from a position of strength or from a position of weakness.

Murray tipped the scales in his favour.
