NCAA Football 08 - 335 Across Middle Biltz

Titans collide in this SportsGamer tip to help us break down the Nickel 335 Across Middle Blitz.

The Nickel 335 Across Middle Blitz is a defense that calls for six defenders to rush the quarterback, while the other five stay back to provide coverage. When this play is setup correctly many people may initially think that the pressure is coming from the left side of the line after the snap. However, when the play does start they'll quickly find out it's coming right up the middle.

Quick Setup

Step 1 - Shift the defensive line to the left (360 - LB + left on d-pad / PS3 - L1 + left on d-pad).

Step 2 - (optional) Call for bump n' run coverage (360 - Y + down on d-pad / PS3 - Triangle + down on d-pad).

SportsGamer tip: Substitute your fastest linebacker in at the Middle linebacker position to create as much pressure as possible through the A-gap.

Play Breakdown

We've come out of the huddle with the Florida Gators having called the Nickel 335 Across Middle Blitz. The only real step required to bring the pressure is shifting your defensive line to the left. In the second image you can see what the defensive assignments will look like after you have taken step 1.

Next, we've decided to use the optional step of calling for bump n' run coverage to slow our opponent's receivers as they come off the line of scrimmage. If you'll take a look at the image to the right it provides a great shot of what your defensive setup should look like before the snap. Now we are ready to begin the play.

As the quarterback takes the snap our six blitzers begin rushing in after the quarterback. The offensive line is able to pick up five of our blitzers, but not the most important one. The middle linebacker perfectly hits the open A-gap just to the right of the center that we created with the line shift before the snap.

The simple step of shifting our defensive line to the left forced our opponent's offensive line assignments to change. The end result on the play is a big sack for the Gators and a big loss in the backfield for the Tigers.

Final Thoughts

The Middle Blitz is definitely a defense that is built to slow down the run and the pass with it's three down linemen, three linebackers, and five defensive backs personnel. This defense already has six defenders rushing, so most runs up the middle with be attacked quickly. Unfortunately, running plays to the outside may be a bit tougher to slow down because all of your blitzers are near the middle of the field. Regardless, the ability to create instant pressure, as well as slow down the run, is why we would suggest giving the Middle Blitz a try in your next game.
