NCAA Football 08 - Oklahoma Wins National Title

December 10, 2007 11:16 am - Author: Daniel Grundei

For years there has been controversy about the BCS and how it decides who plays in the National Championship game. The fact of the matter is the college football bowl season will never rival the popularity of March Madness - it's basketball counterpart - until there is a playoff system that allows for more teams to have an opportunity to win it all. The great part of college basketball is the cinderella stories that the fans get the opportunity to see each year. Why can't the NCAA bring that type of excitement to college football. No matter what you think about Hawaii's schedule, doesn't it seem unfair that they have no chance to play for more? Didn't you want to see Boise State get an opportunity to play one more game after their exciting victory over Oklahoma last season?

Critics of the college football playoff system say that there just isn't enough money in a playoff system. They claim that there is no way college football fans can make travel arrangements to go to a game with just 5 days notice ..... Does this sound absolutely CRAZY to anyone else? Here's an EASY solution. Have a playoff for the top 8 teams. Cut the regular season schedule by one game. Have a three week playoff system, which would be a total of 7 games. Now seed the teams just as the BCS has always done. Now have the higher seed play at home. Bring the sponsor into the stadium of the home team. Who says Tostitos can only sponsor the Fiesta Bowl in Phoenix? Everyone knows that a home football game will sell out at any top football program. Teams that don't make the BCS playoff system can still quality for one of the other bowls, just as usual. Why is this so difficult?

Ohio State will be playing LSU in the National Championship this year. But what would happen if there was a playoff system?

We're going to pretend that someone in the NCAA finally gives the fans what they want to see - and creates a playoff system. Check out the BCS Playoff Simulation - and let us know who you think should be the National Champs!

Here's how the playoff is going to work. There are eight teams that have qualified. We've taken the top 7 directly from the BCS rankings, and we've replaced #8 Kansas with #10 Hawaii. I know this causes controversy but it just doesn't seem fair to let an undefeated team miss out on the playoff action. The higher seed will play at home.

Quarter-Finals

#8 Hawaii @ #1 Ohio State

So Hawaii got their shot at a National title - and they got beat up as many experts predicted they would. It's still nice to see a team like Hawaii get their opportunity - and I'm sure that over time there will be some amazing playoff upsets.

#7 Southern Cal @ #2 Louisiana State

This game was a nail-biter, with USC scoring a game-winning touchdown late in the game. Some would call this a big upset, but these teams are very well matched up.

#6 Mizzouri @ #3 Virginia Tech

Mizzouri had a great season but the hot Hokies beat the Tigers by coming from behind in the fourth quarter.

#5 Georgia @#4 Oklahoma

Oklahoma was able to edge Georgia with an 11-point 4th quarter. This leaves us with our final four - without either SEC school.

Semi-Finals

#4 Oklahoma @ #1 Ohio State

Oklahoma pulls off the upset by going into the Shoe and defeating the Bucks thanks to a huge 2nd quarter. The top two BCS seeds have now been defeating in the playoff format.

#7 Southern California @ #3 Virginia Tech

Southen Cal has now gone on the road two weeks in a row and defeated the higher seed. How exciting would it be to see your team pull off two consecutive upsets?

National Title Game

#7 Southern California @ #4 Oklahoma

Oklahoma has won the National Championship -- a long cry from being stuck in a meaningless bowl game against West Virginia. When are college fans going to get what they deserve - a playoff?

Are we going to see major upsets every year there is a playoff system? Probably not. But there will be more great games, and the games will be more meaningful. "Experts" claim that there's no viable way to pull off a playoff system, but that just doesn't make sense. Give the teams with higher seeds the games at home, and bring the sponsors into the host stadiums. There will be enough money to go around if a playoff system is put together, and the fans will be much happier. Could Oklahoma be missing out on an opportunity to win the National Championship? Yes - and so are six other teams. Give the fans what they want - a college football playoff.

Oklahoma plays West Virginia in the Fiesta Bowl this season, not Hawaii.

Why don't you read the entire thing.. and quit looking at the pictures.

I was referring to the first sentence in the second-to-last paragraph which used to read "...a long cry from being stuck in a meaningless blow game against Hawaii." They have since changed it to West Virginia. Please do not call people out that know what they are talking about.

Thank you SG for fixing it!

I definitely agree with a playoff system because like you said more teams would have had a chance at the championship game, such as Georgia and USC.

I did this tournament with my PS2 5 times and here were the results: OSU won 1; USC won 2; OU won 2. But then i had OU play USC in a "true" Nat. Title game, OU won 52-49 in 3OT.

I think if the NCAA really did a playoff they should use 16 teams instead of 8.
