Graphics or Gameplay?

Competition is what drives most sports video gamers to sit in a room 12 hours a day figuring out ways to dominate opponents. It's all we know. It's in our blood. However, what aspect of sports video games in particular would most competitive gamers say is more important? Is it graphics or gameplay? These are the two biggest factors that people begin asking questions about every time a new game is released. What does it look like and how does it feel? There's no doubt that the sports games that are released now have far better graphics than those of the past. Game publishers make a yearly effort to thoroughly check all the different stadiums and arenas across the country to make sure that they are completely identical to what we see on television. Also, player's faces and body sizes are so detailed now that if we can't see sweat coming off their faces when playing we're disappointed. All of these additions look great, but are they really necessary? In my opinion, the graphics for almost every sports video game is good enough for me to enjoy that all I want the developers to focus on every year is gameplay. Don't get me wrong, I still want developers to put some thought into improving the graphics because I love looking at a detailed picture as much as anyone. However, if I'm not going to be able to enjoy playing the game then what's the point? We've all come to accept the fact that every game that's released is going to have minor glitches and little nuances that everyone finds annoying. My problem is when I see something about an upcoming game that says "now users will be able to see each individual blade of grass on the field", or "player's now have over 200 facial expressions on the court" it makes me start to worry. The reason it makes me worry is because I get this feeling that when I actually get my hands on the game I'm going to run into the same glitchy-type of errors that we saw in the previous version a year ago. Then I have to ask myself why the game developers spent so much time on improving the graphics, while overlooking obvious game flaws. When I think back to Nintendo games like Tecmo Bowl and RBI Baseball it's obvious that the graphics needed some serious improvement. However, even to this day almost anyone you talk to who is familiar with one of these games will tell you that they were a blast to play. Of course these games had plenty of flaws, but overall the gameplay was very good for what it was. In fact, these games are so well-liked that even to this day people continue to update the rosters and play them with regularity. I'm not trying to suggest that this is what developers should go back to, but the fact that so many people loved these games clearly shows that if a game has great gameplay it will succeed. I may be in the minority with this argument, but you can give me great gameplay over incredible graphics any day. I'm sorry, but I just don't care if the newest basketball game happens to have all of Allen Iverson's tattoos if the game is nothing more than a dunk-fest. I still would like to see minor changes made in regards to graphics every year, but I think the number one focus should be on fixing/improving any aspects from the previous year. I don't even care if the games aren't 100% real because Tecmo Bowl and RBI Baseball were certainly not. However, if the game is fun and people aren't able to seriously exploit it, then I don't see how it can't be a huge hit with the public. The bottomline should always be gameplay first, then graphics if you're asking me.

I have RBI Baseball on my phone and it always seems comes in handy when I'm stuck at places I don't want to be.
I think i pre-date most if not all game players...by saying that my proof is this---> in the mid 1980s, i and our gang of 6 created a computer football league, playing a game called "xor nfl football" on a rather cro magnon computer (we also played a baseball game called "earl weaver baseball")..."xor" was an "x's and o's" game, where you played a complete game based on a set of o and d plays (about 50 of each )...no joysticks were involved...it was pure strategy) my point is that given the fact its now 23 yrs later, not much has been developed beyond what we experienced with "xor"...strategy has been only slightly improved/enhanced for the players since way back then... but of course, its the graphics where the true evolution has dramatically improved since...today computer/xbox football must see as dramatic improvement in strategy as it has in graphics in order to grow into the game it should be...developers must grow the game away from "spectacular catches" and 3 joystick clicks in 2 seconds, and more into the thinking, almost chess-like aspect, of the game (i speak of madden here)...what truly boggles my mind is how game developers are missing what i think and know is a Huge market out there ---> the over 40 men market ! ... these folks have the $ to buy the games, the time to play them, and the desire to play them....what they dont have is the stick skills the "kids" have, as that ability was never learned (hey, we didnt have xboxes back then!) and wont be learned by most post 40 males now...what the post 40 males can do is think...and football is far more strategy than pounding the other guy (as is baseball)...we all marvel at some athletic move, but what gets the much louder accolade is the clever, strategic placement of the players and the play called to defeat the opponent!...so for me, madden must greatly improve its strategic appeal and let the graphics take a back seat to them...actually the graphics are quite remarkable now...not much needs to be improved...but please take away the ability of the 14 yr old to outstick me, and place in the game my ability to outsmart him, and then watch the sales of madden explode in the post 40 male market!!!...for me, i would love to see some 50 yr old guy beat some 14 yr old kid in a madden tourney, the old man's win coming from his brain and not his joystick.

I think I know the exact X and O computer game that you're talking about. I used to play that with my family all the time. 4-4 inside charge was unstoppable on defense-lol.
Agreed
I completely agree. I think Super Tecmo Bowl that came out in the early-mid 90s on Nintendo was probably the most fun football game I've ever played. It was the second Tecmo Bowl but had all of the NFL teams and the full roster on the field. The 49ers were kings in that game. I was and still am a Niner fan but I even rooted against the Niners in that game as they were unstoppable just about. The game kept all of the stats and it was a full NFL season. If you won the Super Bowl, there was a fairly long edning sequence that gave you a feeling of accomplishment. The game even had injuries and you could even block field goals although some of the best defenders in the game could tackle the holder on nearly every FG attempt. It was not realistic at all especially having the QB just run back forty yards and tossing a bomb but the gameplay was awesome. I wished it was a little more realistic and more challenging but as simple as it was, there was actually strategy to the simple playcalling. There was even a chain gang and little cinematic animations of cheerleaders and player celebrations on scores and big plays. I remember thinking it would be really cool if there were different stadiums, weather conditions, you could draft players, sign free agents, cut players, and deal with their salaries in a franchise way. Now, we have all that but the developers do not have the strategy part of the game fully intact. The game looks amazing now. They don't even need to work on graphics at all. I thought the graphics on the PS2 were fine. There is so much potential it seems with the 360 and PS3 to work on the gameplay. Game developers could learn a lot from some of the older games.

Gameplay cause when im online in madden and people use teams wit tall wideouts and tight ends like lenord pope should not be able to create seperation on a out route and you should be able to stop people from just thrown the ball up to the tall people and getting it everytime
