March Madness: Midwest Regional Breakdown

March 16, 2008 8:55 am - Author: Kyle Cooper

The Kansas Jayhawks are the most talked about team in the Midwest Regional, but in my opinion the Clemson Tigers are just as dangerous. Clemson has players that average double figures in scoring and they have played well against some of the nation's best teams. This regional also has one of the most compelling games in USC vs Kansas State. The reason this game is receiving so much hype is because there's potentially two first round draft picks in USC guard O.J. Mayo and K-State center Michael Beasley. Take a closer look at the matchups below as we break down the entire regional:

vs.

3/20 - 12:25 - Omaha, NE

Portland State's first trip to the NCAA Tournament is certainly going to be memorable, but
unfortunately I don't think it's going to be for the right reasons. Kansas's backups should
see action as the Jayhawks will walk to victory. Prediction KU 102, PSU 60

vs.

3/20 - 2:45 - Omaha, NE

Kent State will have to keep UNLV from running if they want to control the tempo for this
intriguing first round matchup. The Golden Flashes want to slow the game down and just
make sure that they get the shot they're looking for everytime down the court. In the end,
the patience will pay off as KSU will move on. Prediction KSU 77, UNLV 73

vs.

3/21 - 9:40 - Tampa, FL

The Clemson Tigers are my pick to make a deep run in this year's NCAA Tournament, so
obviously I'm thinking they'll get past Villanova. However, this game against Nova is the game that
scares me the most because the Wildcats are tested. Iif they manage to get by this game, then I
think the Tigers are in for the long haul. Prediction: CU 80, NOVA 76

vs.

3/21 - 7:20 - Tampa, FL

The Sienna Saints can match Vanderbilt score for score if they're playing well, but the question is will
they? In my opinion, I actually like the #13 seeded Saints to win this game not only because I don't
think Vandy's playing very well lately, but also because I think Sienna may actually have more speed
and quickness than the Commodores. Prediction: SU 83, VU 81

vs.

3/20 - 7:10 - Omaha, NE

#6 USC takes on #11 Kansas State in what many believe to be the most exciting game opening
round game of the NCAA Tournament. USC's star O.J. Mayo helps make the Trojans better on the
outside, but K-State star Michael Beasley provides the advantage on the inside for the Wildcats. In the
end, I'm going with inside play this time. Prediction: KSU 64, USC 61

vs.

3/20 - 9:30 - Omaha, NE

Cal St. Fullerton needs to play a flawless game in order to get by the Badgers in the first round. The
good news is I haven't seen them look perfect in a single game all season long. The bad news is I'm
not sure this team even has a perfect enough of a game in them to pull off the big upset over the#3
seeded Badgers. Prediction: WU 74, CSFU 60

vs.

3/21 - 12:25 - Raleigh, NC

Davidson is the pick in this matchup of the #10 seeded Wildcats and the #7 seeded Gonzaga
Bulldogs. Gonzaga is down this year compared to past season's, plus the game is being played in
Davidson's back yard in Raleigh. I think this game could be the best game of the first round, but
ultimately I'll take Stephen Curry and the Wildcats. Prediction: DU 75, GU 74

vs.

3/21 - 2:35 - Raleigh, NC

The Georgetown Hoyas looked good in their run to the championship game of the Big East
Tournament. UMBC simply stands no chance in this game as the Hoyas are exactly what you
don't want to see if you're facing a #2 seed. Georgetown is big, patience on offense, and they
execute. Prediction: GU 80, UMBC 57
