SportsGamer Madden NFL 09 Power Rankings: Teams 17-11

May 20, 2008 7:46 am - Author: Fred Villarruel
In the fourth part of Madden NFL 09 Power Rankings, we rank teams 17-11. If you missed teams 22-18 you can check them out here. And don't forget to stop by our forums and share your thoughts with us!

Assuming Chad Johnson stays, the Bengals offense will be very good again. QB Carson Palmer will have CJ and T.J. Houshmandzadeh as his main targets and there aren’t many teams who have two good corners to stop them. Rudi Johnson should be healthy and ready to take over the runningback spot. The Bengals defense isn’t very good, making their pick of OLB Keith Rivers even better.

One word can be used to describe this offense. Speed. And as Madden used to say “speed….kills”. Their quarterbacks are average but they’ll have nice targets in Lee Evans and rookie James Hardy. Roscoe Parrish will be a very good player to put in the slot to create match up problems. Marshawn Lynch had a very good rookie season and had over 1100 yards. His rating should reflect that this season.

If it wasn’t for Vince Young this team would be rated much lower. Young is the new Mike Vick for Madden ballers looking for the mobile quarterback. The only problem is Justin Gage was your leading receiver and the Titans didn’t really upgrade to help Young. The Titans will have to rely on Young and runningback LenDale White to carry the load on offense. The Titans defense should be good again this year.

How the mighty have fallen. Just a couple of years ago Shaun Alexander was the coverboy, now he’s no longer a Seattle Seahawk. This team is solid all the way around but not spectacular. Matt Hasselbeck is a good quarterback and he’ll have solid receivers to throw to, but can Mo Morris be a feature back for a full season? He’s filled in nicely when Alexander was out, but there is still a question mark

I’m sure Madden himself cried himself to bed after hearing Bret Favre retired. And wouldn’t you know it, Favre made the cover of this years Madden. Is that going to curse the Packers 09 season? Aaron Rodgers? Speaking of Rodgers he’s penciled in as the starting quarterback. The Packers are going to have to rely on a strong defense and a running game that seemed to gain momentum towards the end of the year. Seeing how good this team is without Favre will be the biggest questions.

As long as the Eagles have McNabb and Westbrook they are going to be good in Madden. McNabb should still be a very mobile quarterback and Westbrook should be a dual threat. The Eagles may have average receivers but they should still be able to do the job. Every year it seems the Eagles have a top 10 defense and this year will be no different.

Despite not having a good quarterback, the Vikings are still a very good team. The Vikings have built their team from the lines out and it’s worked. They have arguably the best offensive and defensive lines in the game and Adrian Peterson should be unstoppable again. The only problem I see for the Vikes is Tavaris Jackson at quarterback. But the Vikings did acquire the speedy Bernard Berrian through free agency so at the very least you can send him on a streak and have Jackson toss it up to him. The Vikings defense got even better by acquiring Jared Allen.
