Madden 09: Defensive End Ratings

June 9, 2008 11:34 am - Author: Shanker Srinivasan

Madden 09: Defensive Ends

After a dominating performance in last year's Super Bowl against a normally flawless O-line, Madden now recognized the Giants' outside pass rushers as the best in the game. Despite the loss of Michael Strahan to retirement (though he is still listed here), Tuck and Umeryiora are more than capable of picking up the slack.

The Giants aren't the only ones with a overpowering one-two punch though. Indianapolis, Green Bay, Baltimore, and New England all boast outside pass rushers rated over 90 overall.

Unlike on the offensive end, rookie ratings are a bit toned down. Even the top DE in this year's draft class, St. Louis' Chris Long, didn't crack the top 40 list. Speaking of early drafted DEs, Mario Williams has now ascended to #3; are people still wondering if the Texans made the right decision to pass on Reggie Bush? Does Jevon Kearse's 81 overall entitle him to the nickname "The Freak"?

Because of numerous requests (via PM) for ratings info on backups, we have included every active player in our team-by-team section. This way the franchise enthusiasts can start planning out their trade bait early. We will continue this convention for the remainder of the defense.

Check back in over the next week and a half as SportsGamer will be breaking down ratings for every position culminating with the release of the full Madden playbooks. Also be sure to stop by our forums and share your opinions on the defensive end ratings or leave us specific requests and we'll try to get the answers!

* - Bertrand Berry is not listed in the rating sent by EA but we couldn't find any reason for him not to be in the game as he is practicing and should be 100% by the start of the year.

Top 40

Edit: With Michael Strahan's retirement, this is now the top 39...

Posted by: Moz on June 9, 2008, 12:05 pm
Osi deserves it, but Tuck is not as good as an old Strahan IMO
Posted by: QBtozan7 on June 9, 2008, 12:11 pm
Wats PMV,FMV,BSH,PuR,PRC?
Posted by: DieHardBronco on June 9, 2008, 12:21 pm
Well i know this is Wrong and sports gamer R full of Sh**, If any one knows football, FOR REAL, can they tell me why elvis dumervil has 95 Pwr moves and 92 finesse, its dumervile... ok they made a mistake i can understand that, but 80 block shedding???? Sports game check ur ratings cuz ur wrong
Posted by: DNEUM. on June 9, 2008, 12:21 pm
PMV = Power Move
FMV = Finese Move
BSH = Block Shedding
PUR = Pursuit
PRC = Play Recognition

And wow, 94 OVR for Tuck. Not too sure about that one.
Posted by: Dolphn on June 9, 2008, 12:28 pm
PMV: power move
FMV: finesse move
BSH: bull rush
PUR: pursuit
PRC: not sure
Posted by: DieHardBronco on June 9, 2008, 12:29 pm
Dumervil has an interception, 3 pass deflections, and 2 forced fumbles more than Mario williams, Williams has 2 sacks more and so he deserves 97, while dumervil supposidly gets 90,(Which dont make sense if you check the stats)
Posted by: DieHardBronco on June 9, 2008, 12:30 pm
And where are the greats,
oh and Dolphn, dont say shit u dont know, PRC is play recognition
Posted by: texanfan90 on June 9, 2008, 12:36 pm
Because mario williams is a all around player he can stop the run and rush the passer really good. elvis dumervil is more of a one dimesional player hes mainly there to just rush the passer.
Posted by: sg_Coreyflude35 on June 9, 2008, 12:40 pm
Hmm how does julius peppers have less power moves than dwight freeney... peppers is 290 pound monster im confused
Posted by: Rush23 on June 9, 2008, 1:07 pm
Julius peppers is higher then ogunleye after that crappy season lol
Posted by: bayhighbacon on June 9, 2008, 1:09 pm
I think this is worse than the quarterbacks. EA is going on pure reputation instead of production. Thats why the Giants are so good. They need to make a couple new categories to show that some players are better in run support than pass rushing.
Posted by: Charger on June 9, 2008, 1:47 pm
Nice to see mario didnt get scrubbed like our oline.

Tollefson should at least be a 78.
Posted by: Rolo187 on June 9, 2008, 3:09 pm
Mario Williams 97 overall that's a head scratcher
Posted by: jmitch100940 on June 9, 2008, 3:21 pm
If mario williams is a 97 jared allen should be 99 they just overrated williams this year he should be a 92 or 93
Posted by: texanfan90 on June 9, 2008, 3:26 pm
They over-rated mario a little but it was not a huge stretch in my opinion he should be a 95
if you'll saw mario play in the second half of the season you will know why he was a 97...he was dominant
next year he will be the best defensive end in the nfl!!!
Posted by: billzyear on June 9, 2008, 4:13 pm
Go Bills Schobel 92 Kelsay 83 not a bad duo then u add in rookie 3rd rounder 82 speed!!
Posted by: _BBIB_ on June 9, 2008, 4:54 pm
Tuck's rating is the biggest joke Ive ever seen in Madden History. A backup DE with 94 overall?

Im just hoping the Giants secondary is rated very poorly because their front 7 looks like it's absurd

Posted by: Raider21Magic12 on June 9, 2008, 5:46 pm
I love how Chris Clemons leaves Oakland and suddenly hes an 85 ovl lmfao. Even after the updates he was still like a 78 (maybe i forgot but it could be 76). He one of the worst against the run and is strictly a 3rd down end who had a few sacks in his best year ever.
Posted by: KrazyJvilleD on June 9, 2008, 6:22 pm
Jags rookie DE's are monsters!!! harvey n groves are starting for me next year with that speed and good strenght ratings
Posted by: SerbianWolf on June 9, 2008, 6:35 pm
I have to agree that they jumped on the Giant's D-Line bandwagon a little bit. Mario Williams was dominant in the second half and I think it's funny that Reggie Bush still has done nothing stats-wise and hasn't improved while Williams is becoming a force on D if he lets his momentum carry him.
Posted by: northphilly87 on June 9, 2008, 7:00 pm
They actually did a good job with the D line rating's,but Justin Tuck shouldn't have a higher rating than Trent Cole.
Posted by: SergTINV7 on June 9, 2008, 7:20 pm
WOW How is the Giants' D-Line over-rated??? The only o-line to rape and expose the Pats' O-line which your team couldn't do. Justin Tuck deserves that 94. If he doesn't to anyone then he'll live up to it playing LE full time this season.

Dude... these ratings are directly from EA. The only things I added are age and the team they play for as those weren't listed. If it's a typo, it's on EA's end.
Posted by: ShankDogg on June 9, 2008, 11:52 pm
"Tuck's rating is the biggest joke Ive ever seen in Madden History. A backup DE with 94 overall?"

Technically, he's a starter now...
Posted by: Colts44 on June 10, 2008, 12:46 am
Just thought I tell you guys that Marcus Howard on the Colts should be included in the rookie pool.
Posted by: jeremyishere on June 10, 2008, 2:11 am
Strahan retired. He won't be in the game.

Where is Vernon Gholston? Is he going to play linebacker in the NFL? He worked out with the DE's at the combine.
Posted by: BigBoi17 on June 10, 2008, 7:14 am
The giants....unstoppable
Posted by: BigBadDice_22 on June 10, 2008, 8:43 am
O boy, not looking good for the Steelers. They need to start treating 3-4 DE differently than 4-3 DE.
Posted by: 54Bruschi54 on June 10, 2008, 12:06 pm
Don't know who Cullen Jenkins is so can anyone inform me why he's rated so high? Didn't hear his name all last season.
Posted by: giantcowboy on June 10, 2008, 8:37 pm
You obviously do not watch football if you dont know who cullen jenkins is????
Posted by: TuftsJr1 on June 11, 2008, 4:28 am
The G-men deserve that kind of advantage? Did you see their dline? Amazing.
Posted by: Fins1399 on June 11, 2008, 7:55 am
ALL RIGHT! Jason Taylor's at the top where he belongs!!!
Posted by: forenziks_wP on June 11, 2008, 12:11 pm
No Darren Howard for the Eagles I know he's fighting for a job but I think he would be rated better overall than Victor Abiamari and rookie Bryan Smith?????
Posted by: EazyDuzzit on June 11, 2008, 3:29 pm
For anyone saying the giants don't deserve their ratings...I reference the look on Tom Brady's face when he had absolutely no idea what was going on and the Giants were only rushing 4. And Justin Tuck had 10 sacks coming off of the bench, and playing DT. I'm a Jets fan, but if a team deserves those ratings, it's the Gints. That line did what no one else could...
Posted by: PMitch23 on June 11, 2008, 11:37 pm
I think its funny how Jason Taylor has the best ovr. rank yet he's goin into his last year, the Dolphins don't know whether to keep him or trade him, etc. I honestly agree that EA is going a lot more on reputation than stats. So far I've seen overrated people in every category; which is exactly why I edit the over/under rated players as soon as I pop the game in my 360.
Posted by: Linkfish on June 12, 2008, 1:06 pm
With Strahan retired that will take a pretty big hit to that line, although its still elite. GB is looking nasty, Kampman rated #2, Jenkins 92, and KGB off the bench with 88.
Posted by: sg_Stoob0621 on June 12, 2008, 1:21 pm
Chris Kelsay of Buffalo with only a 83? EA SUCKS
Posted by: DieHardBronco on June 14, 2008, 1:04 pm
Mario Williams 97, thats a F'n Joke
Posted by: Daviddbusiness on June 17, 2008, 1:03 pm
LET'S GO DOLPHINS!!!
Posted by: Twinxx on June 18, 2008, 5:10 pm
Osi did really good this year so he deserved his 97, I'm not sure about tuck being 94 though, maybe 90, too bad strahan didn't have too good of a year, but after 15 years he at least got a ring
Posted by: kortneyd52 on June 22, 2008, 5:25 pm
Wow indy is beasty with freeney mathis and sanders that d will monster in madden
Posted by: tentitans4lyfe on June 26, 2008, 6:20 am
Jevon Kearse is wayyyyyyyyy better than washed-up bryce fisher. Jevon had like 6 sacks in 4 games before he was injured in one of those seasons with the eagles
Posted by: sf49ers2180 on June 27, 2008, 10:49 am
Why did the 9ers draft kentwan balmer, yes bryant young and marques douglas are gone, and yes kentwan was a top prospect but they should have taken a WR like andre caldwell, or limas sweed, or at least a faster DE for pass rushing.
Posted by: king_merk on June 29, 2008, 9:00 pm
One can make the argument that suggs should be on that list as well.
Posted by: sf49ers2180 on June 30, 2008, 11:57 am
I thought jason taylor was a OLB
Posted by: polamalu043 on July 2, 2008, 10:46 am
Naw Jason Taylor plays right end he was jus listed at ROLB and Joey Porter was use as LOLB, last year cus of the multiple D the dolphins used. And Justin Tuck 94?? i don kno bout tht 1 he was ok but he wasnt that great.
Posted by: MMfive on July 18, 2008, 5:20 pm
My problems with this lsit:

How does tuck have a 94? I understand he had a good game agianst the patriots, and put up good numbers as a backup DE, but a 94? Adrian peterson is a 95 this year, and had the best season a rookie has ever had. So how does Tuck get a 94? I pictured him as a 86-90. Oh yeah, and how is Jared Allen a 97, ranked 4th? He had more sacks than anyone and he missed the first three games, not to mention he was palying on a poor team. Oh yes, one last thing: Where is Vernon Gholston? He is palying DE right? Do they actually think he's going to play OLB?
Posted by: MMfive on July 19, 2008, 12:18 pm
If the giants wouldve lost agianst the patriots my bet would be tuck wouldnt even be rated a 90, possibly not even a 80.
Posted by: dawgpound21754 on July 25, 2008, 7:40 am
Jason taylor is extreamley overrated0 he should be a 91 i hate the redskins and steelers
Posted by: detroitbowl09 on July 26, 2008, 2:46 pm
Pretty good . alright detroit got a decent line still even witout that massive night train shaun rogers
Posted by: XCounterfeitGod on August 9, 2008, 11:36 pm
A. Where the hell is Quentin Moses for miami? B. Vernon Gholston is a OLB now, check the preseason games.
