Arkansas's Wildcat formation in Madden NFL 09?

June 11, 2008 7:25 pm - Author: Daniel Grundei

Madden NFL 09 is around the corner, and each year EA Sports adds new aspects of the game that make it even more dynamic. Often times, these new features last only one season as the vocal minority (sometimes majority) are able to influence EA to remove features. Examples of removed features include the total control that Madden 2004 gave us, the quarterback vision cone from Madden 2006, and this year the removal of the spectacular catch on offense. Many people complained that this spectacular catch was too "cheesy", and Madden 2009 reflects EA's response to this complaint with the removal of this type of animation.

The next new feature that is sure to receive scrutiny from the community is the ability to package certain players into different positions. Most notably is the ability in a handful of playbooks to package the HB in at QB. This new package likely stems from the fact that Ladainian Tomlinson has consistently thrown a couple touchdown passes per year over the course of his career. In addition to LT, rookie Darren McFadden is a player that has shown the ability to throw the football. In his collegiate career at Arkansas, McFadden regularly lined up at the quarterback position, often from Shotgun in what was called the 'Wildcat' formation.

Because of his extensive experience handling the snap, EA has given McFadden adequate throwing power and accuracy, which will potentially make him quite a threat lining up in the Shotgun set at QB. After extensive practice with this offensive technique, it is apparent that it will be popular among the hardcore gaming community. With that said, this is not a "Vick clone", as some might think. McFadden's throwing range is about 25 yards, which limits his throws. In addition, it is important to set your feet or the throw isn't going to be accurate. However, I like the potential for this package, and am quite excited to see how this plays out among the online community. There will definitely be a camp of people that call this cheese and consider it a cheat. However, it appears that EA has added this package in a way that it isn't too overpowering. I like the addition and think it adds another element of strategy to the game. Only time will tell, and it wouldn't shock me if this package is removed from the game before it launches - although I would like to see it kept in the game. Here's an example of one play where McFadden shows off his speed.

Notice how MacFadden has a 75 throwing power and 65 throwing accuracy. This isn't up to QB standards, but is adequate enough to make a handful of throws effeciently.

The Shotgun Doubles Y-Slot has a package called 'HB QB Sub', which puts the starting HB at QB, the backup HB at slot WR, and the starting FB in the backfield.

You can see that McFadden is lining up ready to take the snap. This adds another thing for the defense to think about.

Here we show the defense comes out in a standard Man Cover 2. Notice there are no QB spys. This is a mistake when facing the speed of McFadden.

Offensively, the Raiders are ready to air it out. Evaluating each of these routes, it is safe to say that Y (Fargas) and B (Curry) will never be legitimate receiving threats against a defense like this with MacFadden at QB. However, LB (Griffith), X (Walker), and A (Miller) are all running routes that McFadden can likely complete consistently. With deeper routes, the only way McFadden can complete them is when there is no safety help over the top.

After the ball is snapped, the defensive line locks down with the offensive line. As all the receivers go out, you can see that the running back to the right of the screen is wide open. McFadden can make this throw. However, we also see quite a bit of running room to the left and decide to go for the big gain.

After rolling out the left, we see lots of daylight. McFadden is going to run for several yards before anyone has a chance to make the tackle.

As you can see, this play goes for about 20+ yards. This is where the defense is forced to adjust. After the defense takes safety out of coverage to spy the quarterback, some of the other routes might become available.

Should the Wildcat formation be in the game? My feeling is that we routinely see NFL teams line up backs at QB. Randle El has done it for much of his career, and LT seems to be a threat in the red zone all the time. As long as this package isn't too dominating, I see no reason why it can't be used in Madden.

My feeling has been that for offline franchise play, I should be able to put any player at any position. I don't understand why that is limited in franchise mode. I can obviously understand why for online, but come on.

This is some bs because d-mac hasnt proven himself as an elite passing rb in the nfl yet hell ladanian only has a tha and thp in the low 20s wtf????!! am i the only one who sees something wrong with this

This has audible down to goaline qb sneak written all over it

Spy the QB with a Fast safety and DE or Linebacker...Most people who try to run with Young or Vick(back in the day) couldnt pass imagine the interceptions with a Runningback.

If EA allows this in the final version, I will not buy it... Im saying this because of the abbuse it will receive online which is unparallel to the real NFL usage. JUST STICK TO THE BASIC AND DON'T SCREW UP AGAIN EA.

I'd like to see some option plays in that formation. I'm also not surprised about all the sim idiots complaining about this.

I do agree that LT and Randle El don't have better THP and THA (though to be fair, be haven't seen all of their ratings yet).
Posted by: dlips on June 12, 2008, 5:34 am
McFadden, not MacFadden...

and also, the only problem I see with your LT reference is that his TD passes have always come off of HB pass plays where he was pitched or handed the ball and then he threw it. Unless I"m mistaken, he doesn't line up behind center like McFadden in the Wildcat.

You really should use the wildhog formation in madden this year it would be a really be a good secret weapon for teams that have multiply talented running backs like the raiders and the chargers
Posted by: CHEVYRYDA99 on June 12, 2008, 7:26 am
Watch and see this is doing to turn in to such a big glitch like the wide reciver double pass play EA always has to do some dumb crap
Posted by: BKSmokez4Dayz on June 12, 2008, 8:05 am
Brad Smith Wr Jets and Former All Big Ten QB, lines up in this same formation, I hope its in the jets playbook, if A.White watched any Jets tape, he would've have seen the formation with our QB WR SUB, I pray its in the Jets Playbook

Just another "Sad" EA gimmic!

I officially will avoid the raiders online on 09 due to how much that package will be cheesed by some people
Posted by: CHEVYRYDA99 on June 12, 2008, 9:20 am
Your going to have the little geeks that run this play every down this is going to suck so bad online my gosh just watch. Just another thing for the losers that cheat at video games to exploit.
Posted by: Charger on June 12, 2008, 9:57 am
Brad Smith played in the Big 12 not the Big 10.
Posted by: Middle1 on June 12, 2008, 11:10 am
What is the problem. Dmac can only throw the ball 25 yards and needs his feet set and doesnt have a cannon arm. Its simple to stop and 9 out of 10 times he will probably throw a pick. Have your 2 DEs go wide and a spy in the middle with 2 safeties over the top. Throw out in flats you will have DE playing contain and man on man coverage. Or blitz from one side and have contain on the other side.
Posted by: Tommy_Trojan25 on June 12, 2008, 11:38 am
It probably shouldn't be in the game because in all, it will only happen 1-5 times during the entire season, but will become some people's base offensive formation online. But hey, if they continue to make the raiders even more unstoppable on madden, i'll take it.
Posted by: Tommy_Trojan25 on June 12, 2008, 11:44 am
This will be harder to defend than vick because mcfadden is a speed and power weapon, and he can be dominant with slants and drags if you can establish a running game, which, with that backfield, shouldn't be a problem

Love this

I can already see some of the cheese that will be coming out of this.
Posted by: phillyron on June 12, 2008, 12:57 pm
Good thought, but it will be banned from tournament and Madden Challenge play. But online, Cheese it up.
Posted by: Jrazzle on June 12, 2008, 2:14 pm
Brad Smith played in the Big 12 for Mizzou. He did not play for the Big 10 conference. However, Michael Robinson, 49er's halfback played QB for Penn State in the Big 10 conference. Randle El also played QB in college but was moved to receiver in the NFl.
Posted by: Cryomaniac on June 12, 2008, 2:35 pm
Randle El has lined up at QB a couple of times for the Steelers. He should have a 75 THP and 75 THA too. That pass in teh Superbowl if you want a reason.

LOVE IT LOL
Posted by: foofightersrule on June 13, 2008, 1:00 am
I have been calling for this for ages. It really makes sense to see it implemented in the game with the teams that use it constantly throughout the football season. Especially with the athletes coming out that played QB a little such as McFadden, Weddle, Randel El, LT, and many more... KEEP THIS FEATURE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Posted by: CowboysABeast on June 13, 2008, 10:33 am
This play would be great for dallas f. jones 96 speed all day
Posted by: wannaC on June 13, 2008, 7:21 pm
Man you know it'll be taken advantage of and exploited so why ask?

you have to have it cuz its in the game but madden wont offer an adequate deterrent to over using it... itd be nice if they did
Posted by: lupinepunx on June 13, 2008, 11:43 pm
Foreal...can you guys shut up and stop complaining? ill be happy if they add this. This adds more fun to it... every play is stoppable.. and all you have to do is set you're defensive ends to go into qb spy...bringing the pressure and spy youre mlb... no need to bring the blitz on this because his throw power/accuracy isnt that great so the chances he'll throw a bad pass turning into a pick is high. And please stop hating on EA, only thing they need to fix is the disconnect glitches.
Posted by: lupinepunx on June 13, 2008, 11:47 pm
Above post .... i didnt mean to say bringing the pressure... i meant to say... bringing the pressure is not necessary*

Wildcat > Dbl Pass....Rather see the DBl pass than this... DBL is easily defended where as teams like San Diego, Oakland and maybe even Vikings... (I don't think AP can throw but people will abuse the fact he's a basically a Bulldozer with nitrous..If you get the point)
Posted by: Kinglion1982 on June 15, 2008, 11:23 am
Eh...Don't really matter to me, I mean, stop it just like you were playing against a Scrambling QuarterBack. Adjust.. Cant be worse than this

THE WR DOUBLE Pass
Posted by: SonOfWashington on June 15, 2008, 6:06 pm
I hope that Washington's playbook allows for Randle El to be able to throw some balls.
Posted by: Chosen0ne23 on June 16, 2008, 1:18 am
Cheese.
Posted by: HogPin on June 16, 2008, 6:21 am
More like sour cheese. That's not cool on any level. Bad enough that last years "HB Option" and "WR Screen Pass" worked as a glitch play. But instead of getting rid of the non-sense. They consider adding more to it. That's chaotic!!
Posted by: PrIMeTImEKiNg on June 17, 2008, 9:42 am
Omg this team might suck but it dont this team offense is going to be nasty qb mcfadden then u still have damarcus russel to throw the huge deep ball to mcfadden 97 speeddddddd im getting this gm when it comes out midnight gamer tag gam3tim3 fo sho xbox 360
Posted by: dmacfan4life on June 17, 2008, 12:11 pm
Hell ya my boy dmac with the doing what he did in college this is the best cant wait he is going to be great in the NFL. Im sure u all know hes my favorite player

"Eh...Don't really matter to me, I mean, stop it just like you were playing against a Scrambling QuarterBack. Adjust.. Cant be worse than this THE WR DOUBLE Pass"

You couldn't be any more wrong. It's much worse than a WR Double Pass.

First of all, the WR Double Pass is incredibly risky because you have to make a blind pass. And if the defense is in position it could be a fumble in the backfield or INT that's taken to the house.

And it's much less risky than scrambling QB because scrambling QB doesn't have high carry along with 90 trucking and stiff arm!
Posted by: g4theman on June 18, 2008, 5:24 pm
Wow Fucking Gay, Horrible Horrible
Posted by: dmacfan4life on June 18, 2008, 5:46 pm
I cant wait this is going to be fun baby lets go. its much better than vince young cause vince young cause dmac has has 97 speed so all i got to do is hike it and run through the line easy 5 yards dont hate it
Posted by: TonyBlush on June 21, 2008, 12:46 pm
I Dont Really have that much of a problem with this if its from shotgun, cause basically u could either just blitz mcfadden from the outside or put a spy on him, since hes not gonna be able to throw no where.. thp 75 and acc 65.. but i do have a problem with how easy it is to just audible to another formation, such as qb sneak from goaline.. easy yards evry time..
Posted by: yakthelope on June 22, 2008, 4:19 pm
NO
Posted by: StillersPete on June 23, 2008, 5:09 pm
That looks like the stupidest thing in the entire world. But, it will be very effective, his throwing power and accuracy is better than you think, with how wide open some of his guys are going to be because of the threat of him running it, he will be unstoppable

Posted by: StillersPete on June 23, 2008, 5:20 pm
Also, do you know how good the average DE tackle rating is, its bad, you really think putting a DE out to spy will stop his speed and power, you guys are idiots, you would have to spy with a linebacker, or multiple ones, and with 4wrs lined up, you can't cover all of them. With that said, this is going to be the gayest formation if your defending it, and the best formation if your using it.
Posted by: dmacfan4life on June 24, 2008, 6:47 am
I love it so much
Posted by: 1isback on June 27, 2008, 12:25 pm
It dont matter to me one way or the other. im a real gamer and I play football I dont cry about it. To the bama a few threads up that said "if this is in the final version I wont buy the game" Sounds good to me you sound like you need to save your money anyway for all the tissues you need to buy to stop all that whining
Posted by: biggama on June 29, 2008, 6:46 pm
Its a great idea to let u do what u want with a team... its realistic. dont be a dumbshit and whine about it just b/c u suck too bad to defend it. itll be sweet to those who love football.
Posted by: xraidernationx on July 2, 2008, 11:35 am
I think it will be good as long as the defensive lineman go after him like a real qb.....its almost like vince young roling out and running
Posted by: polamalu043 on July 2, 2008, 11:59 am
Every play is stoppable if u complainin bout this thing being in the game ur proley not as good as u think u are if u cant stop this
Posted by: austinmak1 on July 4, 2008, 12:00 am
You guys are bullshit, madden needs these different stratagies to spice up the game, get better at deffense or use the hundred new features to help your gameplan...
Posted by: darius_hord on July 8, 2008, 7:38 am
He did throw a lot of TD's in college... I want to use them and my favorite team San Diego;(
Posted by: letyergamespeak on July 11, 2008, 10:41 am
Wow, this could be dangerous
Posted by: darius_hord on July 12, 2008, 3:16 pm
Stop complaining. It adds more realism and fun. It makes you think about how to contain him whil playing against him. I have to play against him twice a year with the Chargers. I'm looking forward to playing against Oakland. This is going to be fun!
Posted by: runtodaylight on July 18, 2008, 4:03 am
This aint cheese, this aint bs, IF---- IF the real nfl raiders use the play...you cant call it cheese if mcfadden/raiders actually use this play in an nfl game...if you insist it is cheese after they use it, then youre just ignorant, or scared you cant stop it...thats still my bitch with so much of madden...double pass, qb option, etc...i mean, when is the last time mcnabb rolled out and ran the qb pitch to westbrook ?...ah, NEVER...yet i play vs chumps using this play day after day...and when is the last time grossman tossed a pass/lateral to hester who fakes a double pass throw, and then runs ala the double pass play in madden 08 ?!?...ah, never...and when is the last time a qb has been tackled, in a shotgun formation pocket, and gets sacked Before he can even set UP to throw a pass (ala the nano blitz ) ?!?...ah, never...and when it the last time urlacher jumped 5 ft off the ground and intercepted a bullet over the middle ala 'crouching tiger, flying LB' ?!?...ah, never... and when is the last time burress leaped 5ft in the air only to get undercut so badly that in real life, he would have died in the attempt as his neck would have separated from his shoulders on the leap attempt ?!?...ah never...he's still alive...pt is-------> if its REAL, its ok with me...if it aint REAL, get it out of madden FOREVER...and if mcfadden lines up in an nfl game, in the gun, i will use it, or defend it and damn the crybabies who on seeing it, hit the quit button.
Posted by: billycannon on July 27, 2008, 8:30 am
I think this is a great idea. A wonderful feature for people who actually watch football. It's been happening more often if anybody hasn't noticed. Remember last season the Jets ran the option with Brad Smith against the Pats. http://www.nytimes.com/2007/12/18/sports/football/18jets.html?_r=1&n=Top/Reference/Times%20Topics/People/P/Pennington,%20Chad&oref=slogin

Or Boldin in Arizona coming out in Shotgun
http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=easterbrook/071023&sportCat=nfl
It may not happen often or with much reward but it does happen. In my opinion its not cheese if the people that get paid to call plays call that play.

Im a raiders fan its not like he going to be able to throw deep passes he throw int they game him the same passing ratings as college football I'll probly only use this formation in the redzone its going to be noticable that he is at QB anyway madden dnt have a power weapon maybe stiff arm
