NHL 09: Player Types

August 7, 2008 3:37 pm - Author: Shanker Srinivasan

One of the most exciting features to hit the ice this season is the inclusion of 6v6 online hockey on NHL 09. Bringing MMOs (Massive Multiplayer Online) elements to the sports community, NHL 09 may finally remedy a long-standing issue with online leagues in the past, getting specific players to show up and play their games. Instead, NHL 09 will allow you to search through the vast pool of players currently online in order to fill out your roster. In addition to every online player's detailed stats to guide your selection, NHL 09 will also introduce the concept of Player Types. These player types will further distinguish players online past simply the position they play.

As a SportsGamer exclusive, we will be releasing two new player types each week along with their base attributes and what NHL players currently fit the bill. Here are the first two...

I didnt see malkin anywhere?

Malkin is most likely a Sniper...but I doubt his passing rating is below an 85...He's an all around great player, so to pick 1 category is hard, nut he's more of a Sniper than anything.

"Ok so its like player weapons in madden. still very cool."

Not really. Madden player weapons were more cosmetic than anything else. Player types in NHL 09 essentially dictate your starting attributes when creating a player online.

Looks cool, but i refuse to play this game until they make the controls more classic.

"Looks cool, but i refuse to play this game until they make the controls more classic."

You're in luck then since "NHL 94 classic controls" are included in NHL 09.

The stats seem a bit weird för base stats though, a 95 in offensive as base attribute for a sniper?!

By the looks of those playmaker screens it looks like the one timer might be making a come back
i was mad to see how ineffective the one timer is, i've only scored 3 times on a timer in months of playing

I don't get how a sniper has more offensive awareness than a playmaker. Having played lots of hockey myself, 14 yrs, I know that the most aware players are always the playmakers. The snipers are usually people who can shoot. Not that a sniper has low offensive awareness, but a playmakers should definetly default higher.
