GC 2008: Backbreaker Hands-On

August 26, 2008 4:22 pm - Author: Fred Villarruel

Brian Ekberg has posted his hands-on impressions of NaturalMotion's new football title, Backbreaker. Here is what he had to say:

Consider Tackle Alley, a small feature that was the only playable part of Backbreaker today. Initially meant to be a simple tech demo, the feature grew in popularity and now will be included in the final game as an additional minigame. The idea is that you play as a lone runner, whose goal is to make it from one end of the field to the other while avoiding a host of psychotic defenders looking to cripple you at every turn. The running controls in the game are simple as can be--left stick moves the player and right trigger controls turbo. Juke moves and jumps are controlled by moving the right stick left, right, and up.

Throughout our time with Tackle Alley, we tried every juke move we could think of to get away from the defenders, from sidesteps and running backward to trying to leap over them. While we managed to avoid a few, it wasn't long before we were leveled by one or more defenders. It was impressive that no two tackles ever seemed the same. We saw a full-on blast that would knock the helmet off a real NFL running back and two-man tackles that sent our runner's body twisting at painful angles. We even managed to elude a few tackles or step out of a few ankle grabs to continue our march upfield. We never found the end zone, mind you, but we enjoyed trying.

I hope this game is better than madden

They had better have a full continuous franchise mode and NFL style gameplay.

Lame. Football fans will never love this more than madden, simply because it's been proven with Blitz and APF 2K8 that it's really all about the NFL. Also... for the main selling point of this game so far to be a variety of tackles is ridiculous to put faith into.

It's like saying "My god can make sliced bread in 10 ways... come to my church".

I'm not downing the game, but for these lame-o's that hope every game that comes out is better than madden really piss me off.

It's like... Why play the game if it's not what you want? Why are you settling for less when all you want to do is complain about it? And Why does everybody complain about Madden's flaws as if no other game has ever had them? At least they try to fix theirs for all you ungrateful bastids...

But yeah, saw the youtube video and it doesn't seem to have enough depth... at all really. The tackling is nice though ^^

Madden is gonna be da best videgame franchise for yrs to come. no competition.

This could be as good as Madden in some ways. If the AI is good, then it will be very good.

As for the "arcade gameplay" I'm waiting to see actual game footage, not just a mini-game, then I'll decide if it looks arcadey.

Honestly, a NFL license just doesn't matter that much anymore. If the gameplay is solid and roster editing/sharing tools are available, someone will rename the players and teams (obviously, the game will need 32 teams split into 8 divisions though). This is what we see in NCAA football, isn't it?

Well exactly Shanker. I think people get far too hung up on the NFL license. As long as a game lets you edit the rosters there isn't any reason for the license in my opinion.

In some way's I hope this game pisses all over Madden in the same way 2k5 did, because it will make EA realise that an exclusive license isn't the be-all and end-all of making a good sports game.

Another thing.... you people who complain about one of the BEST business moves by a videogame company ever making EA work less piss me off.

And the constant comparisons between probably the most OVERRATED SPORTS GAME EVER in NFL 2K5 and Madden 08 or 09 is ridiculously appearant in how you bastids don't know anything about the industry.

Also, if the NFL license wasn't so important, than why the hell do people try so hard to get Real NFL aspects without it!? And face it, the fact of the matter is there are people who play Madden because they like NFL football, and there are people who Play NCAA because they like COLLEGE Football.

When has there EVER been a generic football game, where the people you played with were completely fake and made up, that has ever been made or succeeded for that matter?

Point is Madden is what it is. Madden is a great game that captures the real Nfl experience, while keeping the competitive edge that involves Skill.

2K5 and every other 2K football game, while great in a lot of aspects, NEVER MADE A GAMER FEEL LIKE HE WAS IN CONTROL OF THE GAME.

Yes, that "This play will never work all the time" or that "You never know if you'll win or lose" crap is what made the game too controlled. There were things you could do sometimes with no effort at all, and some that with no matter how much skill and knowledge you had, you still couldn't do.

anyways... I'm done.
