(Next Gen) Shotgun Normal - Drag Unders

November 6, 2006 10:04 am - Author: Kyle Cooper

We like the Shotgun Normal Drag Unders play because it doesn't require any adjustments before the snap to be successful. This is a play that consistently provides three to four reads, making life very easy for our quarterback in the pocket. Also, because we can snap the ball quickly it means that our opponent will have less time setting up his defense before the snap. Take a look to see why this play develops so well.

Playbooks

Atl, Bal, Chi, Cin, Run n' gun, Run Balanced

Figure 1 - As you take a look at the offensive assignments for the Drag Unders play our first read is the running back moving into the flats on the right side of the field. Let's begin the play.

Figure 2 - Our quarterback drops back to pass and our running backs uses his speed to get to the sidelines quickly. We'll continue to let this play unfold to show you all the remaining options on the field.

Figure 3 - The running back remains open as he continues running outsides. However, we are awaiting the tight end's intial break on his corner route.

Figure 4 - The tight end makes his break to the corner.

Figure 5 - We make the throw by pressing right on the directional pad to put the ball in a spot that only our player can catch.

Figure 6 - Our tight end makes the easy catch with the defender stuck behind him. The running back and the tight end are usually the only reads you need on this play to consistently get positive yardage. However, let's take a look at two more options that are often open on this play as well.

Figure 7 - This picture gives you a good idea why this play is called Drag Unders. Both drag routes that our outside receivers are running are wide open. These two receiver will be your third and four reads on the field, so be sure to look underneath if everything is covered.

Final Conclusion

Shotgun Normal Drag Unders is one of those plays in the game that are just designed well from the start. The spacing on the field in this play is exceptional, and there are no pre-snap adjustments needed to make it work. We would recommend placing your two fastest receivers on the outsides to give you the best chance possible to complete something underneath. Take this tip into practice mode to perfect your timing.
