Madden NFL 09 - Rifle Y-Trips

October 2, 2008 7:41 am - Author: Kyle Cooper

 Cover 2

Most wide receiver screen plays only provide your offense with an option to go underneath.  However, the Rifle Y-Trips WR Screen is designed to attack the opponent underneath and over the top.  Also, with just one quick hot route before the snap you'll have the option of hitting a receiver in the 5-10 yard range as well.  When attempting a screen pass most gamers will slightly roll to the opposite side of the field to pull the defense away from where the setup for the screen is taking place.  What makes this play so great is the fact that you can still go deep when rolling away from where the screen is developing.  Check out the rest of this SportsGamer exclusive breakdown below!

Quick Setup

Step 1 - Hot route the (LB) receiver to perform a drag (360 - Y + receiver's icon + flick right analog stick down / PS3 - Triangle + receiver's icon + flick right analog stick down).

The WR Screen from the Rifle Y-Trips formation will work against man and zone defenses.  However, in this breakdown we'll be showcasing this play against a typical cover 3 zone because this is the type of coverage that is most commonly used in head to head play.

Our WR Screen takes place on the far right side of the field to the (B) receiver.  What we need to do now is change the (LB) receiver's post route because it's far too close to our (X) receiver's skinny post route on the backside.

We hot route the (LB) receiver to perform a drag over the middle to give us another possible read when we roll away from the screen.

We snap the ball and the receivers begin moving into position.

The blocking on the left side of the offensive line is solid on this play, so we drop back and then roll to our left to draw the defense away from the screen.

Update your rosters! The only #80 that should be a Niner uniform, should be Jerry Rice.
