Using motion in the passing game is not only a great way to tell if your opponent's in a man or zone defense, but it's also a way to make certain routes more effective. In this tip, SportsGamer's going to use motion before the snap to create an open target near the middle of the field against almost any zone defense. Another reason we like to use motion on this particular play is because it gives our opponent the appearance that we will be utilizing the opposite side of the field that we're actually attacking. Check out the rest of this breakdown in detail below.
Quick Setup
Step 1 - Motion the tight end to the left and snap the ball when he's behind the left tackle.
Play Breakdown
In this first image you can see the offensive assignments for the Y-Trips Open Strong Flood. This play already does a great job of attacking the different levels of the field without making any pre-snap adjustments. However, when using motion with the tight end this play becomes even more effective because his route is almost impossible to stop when defenses are in zone.
Our opponent comes out in a cover 3 zone that blankets most of the field.
Our tight end's flat route would not be effective against this type of cover 3 zone because there is a defender sliding out into the flats on the right side of the field. However, we're going to motion him to the left side of the field and snap the ball to make him more of a consistent passing threat.
Our tight end begins moving in motion to his left and we prepare to snap the ball as soon as he gets behind the left tackle.
The snap is successfully made when the tight end is behind the left tackle.
