Beating the Bump n' Run With Your Running Backs
In this breakdown we're is going to demonstrate yet another way to abuse the bump n' run. One specific tactic that we like to use in the Weak-I formation gives linebackers fits when they are placed in man to man coverage on the running backs. This method for beating the bump n' run is one of the most consistent and easiest, espescially if you have a lot of speed in the backfield.

Figure 1 - It doesn't always matter what play you choose when using this tactic. However, we have selected the TE Fade play because every receiver's route goes deep down the field. The reason we want everyone else's routes to go deeper is to create as much room as possible for our running backs to run underneath.

Figure 2 - The only two changes that we make on this play is hot routing both running backs to perform up and out routes. If you look closely you'll notice that both of the running back's up and out routes criss cross. The running back's up and out route is to the left, while the fullback's up and out route is to the right. To hot route your players in the backfield to perform up and out routes simply press (XBOX - Y + receiver's icon + right/left / {PS2 Triangle + receiver's icon + right/left). These routes have to criss cross in order for it to work correctly.

Figure 3 - In this image you can see that every other receiver is being bumped on the field except for the running backs.

Figure 4 - Both running backs begin making their initial breaks on their routes without even being touched by a defender.

Figure 5 - The criss crossing effect of the two routes causes the linebackers to get confused, allowing our running back to move into the left flats momentarily unguarded.

Figure 6 - We make the throw with the quarterback by pressing left on the directional pad to lead the receiver.

Figure 7 - The catch is made by the running back with plenty of running room in front.

Figure 8 - We continue running along the left sideline as the defenders chase.

Figure 9 - We are finally caught after an easy gain of 12 yards.
Final Conclusion
This simple, but effective tactic is one that can be extremely annoying to have to worry about on defense. You can expect to see even more separation from certain running backs that are matched up against slower linebackers. If you are still have problems beating the bump n' run, then this is a great solution that will give you at least one option to consistently count on.
