(Next Gen) - Utilzing the Quick Pass to the Running Back

November 18, 2006 4:01 pm - Author: Kyle Cooper

I-Form Normal Curls

Make your running back a receiving threat

One of the most annoying plays that you can force your opponent to respect is the quick pass to your running back. In this next example, SportsGamer is going to break down exactly how to execute this quick pass to get the most out of it every time you run it. The reason this tactic is so effective is because we use motion to create separation from the defense. Read below to add another weapon to your offensive playcalling.

Quick Setup

Step 1 - Motion the running back out of the backfield to the same side of the field that his route is headed.

Step 2 - As soon as your quarterback takes the snap, quickly throw to the running back as he runs to the outside.

Figure 1 - The Cleveland Browns have called the I-Form Normal Curls play from the Chicago playbook. The route that we want you to foucs on belongs to running back Reuben Droughns (Y). Droughns is running into the flats on the left side of the field. Using motion will allow this route to open up even more for our offense.

Figure 2 - In this image you can see that we have sent Droughns in motion as he runs behind left guard Joseph Andruzzi.

Figure 3 - Center LeCharles Bentley snaps the ball shortly after Droughns passes left tackle Kevin Shaffer. The defender responsible for guarding Droughns is right outside linebacker DeMarcus Ware, who is standing up right behind right defensive end Greg Ellis. The use of motion has allowed our running back to get great separation from his defender.

Figure 4 - Quarterback Charlie Frye takes the snap and immediately makes a bullet pass to running back Rueben Droughns as he moves to the left sidelines.

Figure 5 - Droughns makes the catch as the defender tries to recover.

Figure 6 - Our running back has already picked up almost 5 yards as the defense finally closes in.

Figure 7 - Ware finally pushes out Droughns after a a gain of 8-9 yards on the play.

Final Conclusion

Using the quick pass to exploit your opponent will open up a number of other options on the field. We would suggest mixing up your plays by calling FB Dives when using this motion to throw the attention of the defense elsewhere. Also, you will see many players start to manually try to run over and guard this pass, alowing you to hit them deep for a big play.
