Shotgun Trips TE QB Wrap

The Shotgun Trips TE QB Wrap is a play that only a handful of quarterbacks are going to be able to run well. The reason only a handful of quarterbacks are able to run this play is because it is a designed running play. You must use a quarterback that has good speed if you want to get the most of out it. Also, the quarterback gives a fake handoff to the running back, delaying the play just a bit after the snap. Fortunately, the delay is minimal, and the rewards can be great when properly executed. Take a look as SportsGamer breaks down this unique play.

Quick Setup

Step 1 of 1 - Make sure that your opponent does not have any defenders lined up outside of your tight end. Otherwise, this defender could create problems in the backfield if he isn't blocked immediately.

Play Breakdown

Figure 1 - The Tennessee Titans have come out in the Shotgun Trips TE QB Wrap play. There's one part of the defense that we like to take a look at before we begin the play.

Figure 2 - We look to our left with quarterback Vince Young to notice that the Houston Texans have each of their cornerbacks lined up in front of our receivers.

Figure 3 - Next, we look to the right to see that there are no defenders in that area of the field. The key to making this play work is to make sure that there are no defenders near the line of scrimmage that are lined up outside of tight end Erron Kinney. If you see defenders to the right, then we would suggest changing your play because there is always a chance that you could get blown up in the backfield. Let's go ahead and begin the play.

Figure 4 - As soon as the play begins, left tackle Michael Roos runs behind the offensive line to act as a lead blocker on the play.

Figure 5 - The Texan linebackers suck down towards the line of scrimmage as Young starts to give the fake to running back Chris Brown.

Figure 6 - Roos continues to pull across the field as Young completes the fake. Meanwhile, we want you to notice just how much the defense has committed towards the left side of the field. Young's ability to sell the fake creates big play potential on the backside.

Figure 7 - We look to follow behind Roos as we head upfield with Young.

Figure 8 - Texans' strong safety Glenn Earl is the only defender who was not completely fooled on the play. Unfortunately for Earl, he's got to find a way to get around Roos if he wants to get to Young.

Figure 9 - Roos makes the block on Earl to spring Young free into the secondary.

Figure 10 - Backside free safety C.C. Brown finally recognizes what is going on as he sprints across the field to try to catch Young.

Figure 11 - Young has already picked up 10 yards as Brown is finally closing in to deliver the hit.

Figure 12 - The Texans save the touchdown this time, but not before we were able to pick up 20 yards on the play with Young.

Final Conlcusion

The QB Wrap is a good play to keep your opponent honest on defense. Typically, when your opponent sees you coming out in a spread out formation they will select some kind of Dime or Quarters play in an attempt to match your speed on the field. However, if you are also able to run the ball from the shotgun formation, then you can expect to surprise your opponent at least once a game for a big run. Check this play out in practice mode before heading into live competition.
