Create-a-Play Opens the Door to New Possibilities

NHL 08 - AI and Play Creation

Dean Richards introduces the new AI and the create-a-play feature

In the latest video from EA, we catch a glimpse at one of NHL 08's greatest features, Create-a-Play.  Although the Skill Stick and new Physics system may have more visual flare, this feature will have greater impact on gameplay and strategy.

Create-A-Play

First of all, I just want to point out how amazing this feature looks.  You will now be able to create any play you want, customizing them to whatever strategies you use.  Because the AI will move precisely the way they are directed in the play art, you effectively control how your AI teammates react in different situations (ie. powerplay, shorthanded, breakaway).  Essentially the playbook that you create will be completely unique.

Watching producer David Littman demo this, it truly is a robust create-a-play feature.  In create-a-play mode you're able to play, pause, rewind, and basically tweak the play around very easily.

While these are all a testament to how robust the feature is, the best part is how well it is implemented.  You don't have to announce or press a button to initiate the play.  The AI is smart enough to recognize a certain motion you are doing, recognize the appropriate play, and act accordingly.  Also, you don't need to worry about the arrows appearing on the ice, as shown in the video.  Those can be turned off to not give the play away.

David comments:

"Alot of people seem to think that the lines on the ice showing you the play is 'too arcade' but you have the option to turn the create-a-play visual lines off. We know that when you play your buddy at home, you don't want them seeing your play.  Also, if you've practiced your play enough, you should know where your players are going anyway so the lines aren't necessary if you know your play"

The possibilities seem endless with this feature and should allow you to really score in bunches if timed right.  One thing to remember... the AI in this game is much smarter than 07.  If you keep running the same play over and over, the AI will recognize it and counter, whether it be a body check, hook or whatever.  Use your plays sparingly or mix it up, otherwise you'll be scooping the puck out of your own net way too often.

I will be posting my impressions of the adapting AI in the next few days so keep an eye out for it.  Thanks for reading!

- Steve

I'm not a huge hockey guy (which is a sin in ND...), but I'm definitely going to have to rent this game simply to play with the create-a-play. That looks sweet as hell.
