Great game that gets old fast

User Rating: 7 | Far Cry 6 PC

I've never been a fan of the Far Cry series but this iteration really is quite good. The story is set on the island of Yara in Cuba, where a dictator has taken over and is havesting a type of tobacco using the residents as slaves. The main protaganist Dani is an insurgent helping to lead a revolution and restore order to the island.

This game is very taxing on systems and although the graphics are great, they are certainly not the best I've seen given the steep system requirements. At times my RTX 3070 has struggled because this game requires lots of VRAM and occaisionally I experience artifacting, massive fps drops to less than 10fps and blocky textures on screen. My graphics card isn't even powerful enough to install the high resolution texture pack. As my card does not stuggle with other games I suspect this may be down to poor coding more than anything else.

The voice acting is amazing - probably the best in a game I have experienced and you really get to know and like the various characters who have real personalities.

Gameplay is really good - weapons feel balanced, controls (although there are a lot of keybinds) make manouvering easy and everything feels just right. As for combat NPCs are bullet sponges (although not as bad as in Cyberpunk as 4-5 shots will take a baddie down but a headshot is instakill). It has an autodrive feature when you get in a vehicle so you don't have to steer yourself towards the next objective, however it doesn't work very well and you often find the vehicle crashing into walls.

The game is fun with loads of WTF moments and jaw dropping surprises. The chaos really reminds me of GTA5 in places and it feels like a cross between that game and certainly has almost similar mechanics to last year's Assassins Creed Valhalla, with tones of Tarantino's Pulp Fiction.

FC6 has had a lot of negative player reviews saying it is boring. Initially I could not understand this as I thought it was fantastic, however by the time you are about 10 hours in and have seen all the mechanics, it becomes very very repetitive and I now understand the "boring" ratings. Initially I started playing everyday but after not too long I was launching the game once a week. An annoying feature is that every time you enter combat you receive a call from one of your compadres who gives you exactly the same scripted message each time. I know I'm bored with a game when I stop bothering to loot stuff. About half way through I was thinking when the hell is this game going to end.

Like Cyberpunk, there are a lot of guns in this game and each can be "upgraded", but there's no real progression system as the very first guns you get are better than anything else you pick up later in the game and there's no reason to swap out the early weapons - The same can be said about clothing/armour

This is a very long game (around 60 hours) but with the repetitive nature I am not sure if I will make it to the end. It's a bit annoying these days when games come out that are very long but the length is made up of repetitive filler missions (The main quest is around 23 hours). This game would have been better without the repetition and if it was much shorter.

I play at 4k 120hz and get 85fps at a mix of high/medium settings
