Retain Assistants or bring in your own people?
To go along with the question of changing players to suit the philosophy or changing the philosophy to suit the players, what will you be doing when you go into your first staff meeting? Will you fire the first coach who says hello? LOL
I've posted numerous times about staffing and that whole aspect of it, because that's probably my favourite aspect of Head Coach. A great staff is as integral to building a great program as great players are. Personally, I will probably change co-ordinators at minimum. I may end up retaining my Receivers coach, and I may also end up retaining Mike Sherman, because he's with the Texans as an offensive line coach, and I may just promote him to Offensive Co-ordinator. Beyond that, I'm cleaning house. When a team goes 2-14, massive changes need to be made going into the following year. |

I'll look over the initial coaching staff and then release those that don't have the attributes i am looking for...
With me being a defensive minded coach i want an exceptionally minded offensive coordinator, and can get by with an average defensive coordinator... |

When I was playing the game I fired a guy because during the staff meeting he said "hey buddy." It's funny because some of them will grovel for their jobs, saying they hope you keep them on. I'll definitely assess the staff and bring in at least a couple of preferred assistants.

This is tough but I think I would keep a lot of the coaches. Mainly because they know the pros and cons of each player already. In hiring a new staff you still have to "discover" all that stuff. Ofcourse If I had the opportunity to hire a guy I covet id do it. I would bring in my own people slowly. Most of the time there are real good assitants, but who lost with a lame head man. The other thing is how can you evaluate a coach if you havent worked with him? You may be firing him for things out of his control. Id wait for them to fail on their own before firing them. |

Concerning the retaining or firing of coaches though, I don't like making changes. If I believe that I agree on philosophy with someone who is already there, I won't fire him just so I can bring in "my guy". As a guess, I'd say it is likely to be tough to get a guy to make a lateral move from the same position in another organization to mine. Most will want to move up a notch. That would make it a necessity in most situations to hire someone based on the potential you think they have rather than success they are curently demonstating. |
