Flyers' Desjardins To Retire
We all saw this coming, looks like it's going down tomorrow ...
Flyers' Desjardins To Retire The former captain of the team had been slowed by injuries in recent seasons. By Don McKee Inquirer Staff Writer Eric Desjardins, 37, the longtime Flyers defenseman and former team captain, will announce his retirement tomorrow, a team source told The Inquirer last night. The veteran was not offered a contract by the Flyers this summer, and had been slowed by injuries the last several years. Desjardins was acquired in one of the biggest trades in Flyers history. He came from Montreal on Feb. 9, 1995, along with John LeClair and Gilbert Dionne, in exchange for Mark Recchi and a third-round draft pick. He wound up playing 738 games as a Flyer and amassed 396 points. Only Mark Howe, who had 480, had more among Flyers defensemen. Desjardins had 136 goals and 439 assists in his 17-year NHL career. Desjardins missed 29 games last season after undergoing shoulder surgery. He missed the playoffs in 2004 after breaking his right forearm, an injury that also cost him 29 games of the regular season. He sat out the final eight games of the playoffs in 2003 with a broken foot. Desjardins scored all three Montreal goals in a 3-2 overtime victory over the Los Angeles Kings in Game 2 of the 1993 Stanley Cup Finals. The Canadiens won the Cup. Although it's sad to see him go I think it was definitely time. I remember back in the mid-90s when throughout a whole season you would never see this cat cough up the puck. Thanks for all the great memories Rico!! __________________ GAVE ME ![]() |

Thanks for everything Rico. I'm sort of sad to see him go. He was a constant in Philly sports. It will probably feel a little weird not hearing his name at least once in game this year. Enjoy life after hockey, you deserve it.

After the way he has played recently and given your team of choice I can understand why! ;)
But on a more serious note, I will never let his last two seasons mask the fact that he is probably the greatest Flyers defenseman I ever saw since I started watching them. As Brett alluded to, there was a time where he was consistently playing at or just below Norris Trophy level. P.S. Awesome sig, Brett. Looks like he's put on a few pounds (and put down a few bottles of scotch) since he retired. __________________ “Raider fans like to paint their faces and pretend to be crazy; Eagles fans really are crazy.” - Michael Irvin |

So long Rico. Great player...sad to see him go, but he has really lost a lot of the past few years.
Most memorable goal? That snapshot ripper in the 1995 playoffs, Game 1 in OT vs the Rangers. Awesome. And that little shuffle he did after he scored just added to it. ![]() |

Doh, we lost our right handed shot from the point!!
We have Baumgartner as our only right handed point man now and who knows what he'll be like... __________________

I really always have liked him. I thought he was a good player, usually consistent, never gave anyone problems. Yes, he played the majority of his career with my team's rival, but still, there are, and have been, lots of players on the Flyers that I like a lot and have respect for. In fact, about 2 or 3 years ago I liked almost their whole team. They had a great group of guys and talent at one time: Primeau, Recchi, LeClair, Roenick, Desjardins, Kapanen, Gagne...how can you not like a lineup like that? |
