On the NHL | Air of familiarity as Sanderson joins Flyers
By Tim Panaccio
Inquirer Columnist While there may be at least eight new players in the Flyers' dressing room this season, Geoff Sanderson won't have to look far to spot a familiar face. He's played with Keith Primeau, Sami Kapanen, Denis Gauthier and even Nolan Baumgartner. "It makes the transition easier to come into a locker room when there's so many old teammates," Sanderson said this week at Skate Zone. Among the forwards general manager Bob Clarke signed this summer, Sanderson's stick has the most sizzle. A 40-goal guy early in his career and a 25- to 30-goal guy now in his 16th season, the 34-year-old left winger is expected to make an impact. "I look at what I had last year - 25 goals - the opportunities and missed games," he said. "It took me a half year to work myself into a situation where I got play on the power play and get some minutes in Phoenix. I think I can duplicate what I did last year. It will be tough. It takes the right situation, but I don't think it is out of reach." A little history: The last time Sanderson played on a line with Kapanen against the Flyers was Feb. 19, 1997, when the Whalers were still in Hartford. Jeff O'Neillcentered both during a 2-2 tie at the Hartford Civic Center. "You're taking me way back now; I can't even remember that," Sanderson said, laughing. "Wow! But I remember the kind of player Sami was." A center in Phoenix, Sanderson will play left wing here. Hmm... if Primeau is healthy, how about a line of Sanderson-Primeau-Kapanen? "I forgot how skilled and how fast he was," Primeau said of Sanderson. "He played with Andrew Cassels when we were in Hartford and Carolina. He was a pure goal scorer. I see him out there and I don't know if he gets better with age or what, but he's going to be a great addition to our hockey team." Radio change. WIP's Glen Macnow has joined the Flyers broadcast crew. Macnow will do a short handoff to Tim Saunders and Brian Propp that begins most pregames, returns between periods from the studio, talking to fans and others, adding insights, and hosting some fan interactive contests. WIP will broadcast coach Ken Hitchcock's postgame news conference, then do live locker-room interviews and return to Macnow in the studio. "I think the Flyers and WIP both wanted something between periods to keep the audience from getting up and going to get a hamburger," Macnow said. "This is going to allow Tim and Brian to focus on broadcasting the game." On the road, Macnow will remain in-studio. Macnow has a solid hockey background and is a welcome addition. Loose pucks. Columbus pulled its one-year, $1.25 million offer to Nikolai Zherdev off the table but let stand a three-year, $3.8 million deal. Zherdev is threatening to play in Russia this season.... Arbitration backfired for Buffalo's J.P. Dumont, who was awarded $2.9 million on a one-year deal. He knew GM Darcy Regier would walk away. Dumont was cut loose, and he signed a two-year deal with Nashville worth $4.5 million - less on average than the award. "The way it ended was not good," Dumont told Hockeybuzz.com. "Too many bad feelings. Arbitration is nasty."... Tryouts for the Delta Ice Team squad will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Skate Zone in Voorhees, Camden County. Those interested must e-mail flyersiceteam@comcast-spectacor.com in advance... . Members of the JCC Maccabi Philadelphia Hockey Team, who won the 2006 North American Games in Vancouver, British Columbia, will meet the Flyers at Skate Zone on Tuesday... . Former Tampa Bay captain Dave Andreychukwill be honored in December at the St. Pete Times Forum... . TSN.ca reports that tough guy Tie Domi, now 36, will probably retire. Domi told the Web site that his hip was troubling him and he didn't want to uproot his family from Toronto... Players working out at Skate Zone this week said there was talk that Devils' GM Lou Lamoriello might trade Scott Gomez because of his salary-cap situation. It's more likely he's looking for someone to take Vladimir Malakhov... Finally, former Maple Leafs coach Pat Quinn said the following about middle management on radio recently, and the Toronto Star picked it up: "I don't know who defines success today, but we have a lot of those middle managers, so to speak, the presidents, that don't have a clue what's going on, but might be able to build a logo," Quinn said. "But you know what builds the logo? Winning hockey games, that's what builds a logo. Anyone else that says they can come in and make something work... It's like in Toronto. You don't need to be the village monkey to do anything. That [arena] was sold out when it was just a lousy team. So, let the people that are given the job to run the hockey team, let them run it." You can read a lot into that, eh? http://www.philly.com/mld/philly/sports/15426595.htm |

I'm okay. Russian machine never breaks.

Malakhov back to the Flyers?
I must say, I was happy with the Russian duo we had with Markov/Malakhov. He was pretty steady for us. I miss Markov too... <3 __________________

I don't want Malakhov back to the flyers for 2 reasons. A) It helps the Devils get rid of some cap space and B) We simply don't need him.... oh yea and i guess C) we don't have the cap space
plus he is pretty much done, he most likely won't make it through another season. I hope the devils get stuck with his salary. |

Yeah I agree, but I'd love to have Markov back. I loved him in a Flyers uni. Letting him go was one of the worst losses we've had over the past few years.

I agree, Markov had wheels, somewhat, and played the perfect Flyer hockey game in and game out. I still remember his goal in the Devils-Flyers series a few years back and his goal won game 6 I believe for us.
I wouldn't mind seeing Malakhov back, but at about 1.2-1.5 million a season, not his mid 3 million range. |

Markov was the perfect package: he could hit, he was extremely physical, he had speed, he could score, and he didn't get caught much at all. Plus on top of all that he wasn't a big contract player. One of my fav defensemen.
