I’m currently playing Dragon Quest XI S Definitive Edition on the Switch and absolutely loving it. It’s also a huge game with tons of content. I’d certainly recommend that game.

Divinity Original Sin 1 and 2

Enderal: Forgotten Stories - This Skyrim mod shames many AAA games

Baldur’s Gate 1 and 2

Planescape Torment

Gothic 1, 2, and 3

Dragon Age Origins Ultimate Edition

Many more, but those will keep you busy for 1,000+ hours! ;-)

Much like @Archangel3371 said the Dragon Quest games are usually a good pick. Dragon Quest XI (Switch) as well as VII (3DS) are the ones that I've played and have thought to be good. I'd especially go with XI as it's the most recent mainline title released in the west I believe. It's a good length. Not too hard either. The addition of crafting is fantastic too and helps tremendously.

FFVII & X are a must play. Especially VII.

Just taking a hunch.

When someone writes "rpg" three times in a thread and "action" zero; they're probably less interested in ARPG games like Bloodborne.

it should be a very simple task to just look at game site's ratings in their RPG sections for the history of good RPGs.

i thought The Outer Worlds was great. i also enjoyed Kingdom Come: Deliverance. Encased: A Sci-fi Post-Apocalyptic RPG is a lot of fun so far but still in early access.

for older games; the Knights of the Old Republic games. the Elder Scrolls games, especially III: Morrowind & IV: Oblivion. the first Mass Effect game. the Neverwinter Nights games. Fallout, Fallout 2, Fallout: Tactics. Wasteland 2. Planescape Torment & Torment: Tides of Numenera. Shadowrun Return & Shadowrun: Dragonfall...

If you are looking for an RPG adventure, maybe "Fable" or maybe "Jade Empire" is interesting. The latter has a plot like a kung fu movie but it is amazing. They are games of another generation.

maybe inside the j-rpg on ps1 I recommend Brave Fencer Musashi and Chrono Cross .... but they're old guys too ... :)
