Started playing Octopath Traveler 2 (did not play the original) and I love the boost system in this game! Makes the turn by turn combat more entertaining and fun. I only just started, but this got me thinking, what are your favorite turn based RPGs, GD? I thought Persona 5 and Dragon Quest 11 were great.

Fire Emblem Awakening is my favourite (on the 3DS). The story took some turns that I didn't see coming and the graphics were great for a 3DS game. I'd also like to give a shout out to Pokemon X/Y. It's the best in the series, in my view. I played the heck out of that game.

For overall enjoyment as a fine balance between story and mechanical depth? I'm slightly torn.

Non SRPG, it's probably Chrono Trigger. It's just a wonderfully balanced game that doesn't overstay its welcome or try to drown the player in a bloated story. Well made and respecting the players journey without padding.

SRPG? Between Disgaea 5 or Divinity: Original Sin II. Baldur's Gate III may take that title but time will tell. Just well designed games. D5 has easily the worst story in any Makai Senki Disgaea, however the gameplay is easily the series most refined and customisable that it's easy to loose track of its weak story cast and 'campaign'. The end game bosses are also the series finest along with best overall level design for stage layouts. OSII speaks for itself, it's just a near perfect game, the two shield types throw some off but it's a fine system once you embrace how the game is designed. Comes down to positioning, elements, and team combos.

Admittedly I play way more Strategy Role Playing Games over Traditional Turn-Base; as I find the latter usually brain-dead and boring in most cases, more as a slog than enjoyable.

For turn based RPG - Persona 3.

For Strategy RPG - FF Tactics, Tactics Ogre Let Us Cling Together and FE GBA.

Special shoutout to FF7, Golden Sun TLA, Suikoden V, DQ8, Stella Deus and some I forgot. Really enjoyed the games as well.

I'm really enjoying Wartales, if that counts.

Yeah I really enjoyed XCOM games. Originals were great but I thought the "reboots" were good as well. Good expansions for the second one.

I think it's likely to at least be a great SRPG. With tons of content and replayability. On its best day it'll be the best SRPG we've had in a decade. The latter is what I hope for but trying to manage realistic expectations.

Larian are a pretty talented studio that love making complex battle systems and layered in-world economy.

While OSII got amazing reviews, I feel BGIII is the game that'll get a lot of eyes on the studio as a general treasure in the industry.

As I've seen some around dismiss OSII as a cheap Kickstarter game. BGIII is a much bigger budget game and following the same testing and quality checking strategy they used for OSII.

I know some old BG elitists will burrow out their ancient caves to say it's not faithful, new battle system is bad, and "it's Divinity Original Sin III" but these people are frankly idiots. And they've been screaming that nonsense since it was announced Larian was working on BGIII.

I haven't played a whole lot of turn based rpg's, but of the ones I have played, I had the best time with these four:

Final Fantasy 7 (PS1, 1997)

Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete (PS1, 1999)

Golden Sun (GameBoy Advance, 2001)

Final Fantasy X (PS2, 2001)
