And then there were 24

7 players were cut from the team. I was hoping Bourdon would stay around. Nice to see Lee Goren is still on the Canucks though.

I wonder how Fedorov lasted through these cuts. He was good last night, but he wasn't the rest of the pre-season

At some point in time, the Canucks organization has to realize that they can't manhandle all their prospects. Some guys are headcases and need to be treated "specially"

Umberger was one, Fedor is another.

Bottom line is, this guy has top 6 skill and gamebreaking ability. Sure he's lazy in the D zone and takes bad penalties. So does Todd Bertuzzi.

Give him a chance because we all know the Canucks cant draft worth crap, but if they can fix Fedor, they have a gem on their hands.

In 3 years, we cant really win with a team full of 3rd line grinders like what we have drafted in the pipeline.

Glad they released Doig he sucked from what I saw, he just got in the way.

Don't like that Bieksa was sent back down but he is still injured so maybe a future call-up?

I'm surprised they didn't release Butenschon too!

See that hit that got laid on him by some guy who's name escapes me during the first few games of the pre-season?

he's sent down to moose with Johnson and Green because of Waiver reasons.

I'm glad Fedor stayed with the team though :)

Umberger was one, Fedor is another.
The loss of Umberger not only dropped Vancouver's depth, it also (in combination with the losses of Umberger and Brandon Reid) killed Vancouver's depth down the middle. Interestingly enough, Fedorov is a natural centre, but it's unlikely the Canucks will use him in that position if he's signed.

As far as being treated "specially"...I would say Fedorov has. He broke curfew during his second season, slept in and came late to training camp during his third season, and in his most famous incident, broke curfew the night before an afternoon game to party.

The Moose were already down to 17 skaters for the latter game (Jason King was in Vancouver, Ryan Kesler was at the World Juniors in Finland, Nathan Smith and Martin Grenier were out with concussions, and Wade Brookbank had just been claimed off waivers by Nashville), so even with Fedorov in bad shape to play, he was put in the lineup by then-Head Coach Stan Smyl. What followed were a comedy of errors by Fedorov in front of not only the crowd at the old Winnipeg Arena, but a national audience on Rogers Sportsnet...oh, and one angry Irishman with the last name Burke, who happened to be in town for the last two Moose games before Christmas of that year.

Despite all these things (and yes, he was suspended ten games for the last one), he somehow still got called up by Vancouver down the stretch. Any lesser talent likely would've been tossed into a box and FedEx'd (no pun intended) to Siberia before even being considered for recall by the Canucks. How anyone can say Fedorov wasn't being treated specially when he gets called up after making a fool of himself on national TV is beyond me.

It should also be noted that Fedorov's incident in December of 2003, followed by his recall by Vancouver just over a month after his ten-game suspension ended ruined the Manitoba Moose and any sense of chemistry the team had. In fact, it was this incident that caused Moose management to re-evaluate its affiliation with Vancouver, and eventually lead to the hiring of Randy Carlyle as Head Coach.

Lazy in his own zone, sometimes lazy in the offensive zone (in fact, hasn't shown much offensive flair in the NHL), tries to do too much on his own (though this has gotten better), takes bad (and lazy) penalties, produces more giveaways than a radio station during ratings time...and let's not forget the indiscretions I mentioned above. None of this is anything new from when he was in Manitoba.

Now, in Fedorov's defence, he did lose pretty much an entire year of development in his rookie year after taking a puck in the eye while in Columbia during a conditioning stint.

The question is how long this "fixing" of Fedorov will take. Also, if he's going to be in Vancouver on his potential offensive upside alone, how will he be able to use those offensive skills effectively if he's locked on the bottom two lines. As things go, the top two lines (WCE, "Brotha Line") are set. He better learn how to play in his own end quick if he expects to move up. Either that, or he better sign a two-way deal with the Canucks and work his way up the depth chart by dominating offensively in Manitoba.

3rd and 4th line grinders, and hoping that a few of the offensive prospects they've taken a chance on either pan out (guys like Schultz, Nolan, Bernier and Hansen) or at least come over to North America (Gladskikh, Krikunov, Danielsson). If there's any plus side, at least the d-men and goaltenders look promising.

.
you can add Mason Raymond to that list too, he was a second round draft pick after all...

Hopefully he can show that offensive skill in college hockey
