Detroit franchise hires former Saginaw Coach
PONTIAC, Mich. (AP) - Moe Mantha has been appointed head coach of the new Detroit franchise of the World Hockey Association.
Mantha, 43, most recently served as U.S. National Development Coach with the USA Hockey National Team Development Program. During his tenure, he coached national under-18 and under-17 teams and directed training. ``To me, there is no greater honor than to have a coaching position in the best hockey town in the USA,'' the former NHL defenceman said in a statement. ``Detroit is a city of champions and we look forward to continuing that tradition.'' Before joining USA Hockey, Mantha spent four years coaching the minor-league affiliate of the Anaheim Mighty Ducks in Cincinnati. He began his coaching career in 1992 as an assistant coach with the AHL's Hershey Bears (1992-1994), and has also coached the ECHL's Columbus Chill (1994-1995). Mantha lives in Ann Arbor with his wife Kathy and three children. Drafted in 1980 by the Winnipeg Jets, he played with the Jets, Pittsburgh Penguins, Edmonton Oilers, Minnesota North Stars and Philadelphia Flyers. He retired following the 1991-92 season with 370 points in 656 regular-season games. Senticore Inc., a public holding company based in Hollywood, Fla., last month announced its purchase of the Detroit franchise. It will begin its 38-game home season in October at a newly installed ice arena in the Pontiac Silverdome. http://tsn.ca/headlines/main_story.asp?id=88709 (There is an error in the article, he was last the coach of the Saginaw Spirit of the OHL) |

Just because a team hires a coach doesn't mean it could happen..... it might pull a CBL and play like 2 months then fold in on it's self |

Cool I guess.
BTW, everybody has to do the world a favor and vote for Detroit Cougars for this franchise's name. http://www.senticore.com/poll/poll.php. Anything else would be embarassing. :(. |

Debate King of Kings

I can't imagine ever going to the Silverdome for a hockey game. Good sightlines or not, that sounds like the punchline for a really bad joke. Although, it does give them something more to host than Monster Trucks and Indoor Snowmobile Racing this Sunday SUNDAY Sunday for Ten Bucks!
