Horrible idea ahead... obviously it can't be the leafs... so how about the Toronto Roots (or some other non-leaf name) with a brown-green-yellow-white color scheme like that of a tree.

It will probably be a new name. The changed the Fredericton Canadiens to the Quebec Citadelles to the Hamilton Bulldogs... I wouldn't doubt it if they did the same for the Leafs.

Can we say kick to the Balls Boys and Girls?
---------------------------------------------------------- Quebec league has no eyes on St. John's WebPosted Aug 13 2004 07:36 AM NDT ST. JOHN'S — The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League has no plans to expand into St. John's, despite aspirations of city officials looking for a replacement for the Maple Leafs farm team. Councillors and local sports executives say the best chance for filling the void at Mile One Stadium is in the Quebec league. The Toronto Maple Leafs announced earlier this week they would be moving the so-called Baby Leafs to Toronto at the end of the upcoming season. From Aug. 10: After Leafs, city may be looking for a 'Q' But Gilles Courteau, the commissioner with the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, says there are no plans to open a franchise in St. John's. "I've told them very frankly that there was no expansion plan on a short-term basis in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League," Courteau says. Keith Coombs, the city councillor responsible for managing Mile One, says moving a franchise from another city may be the ticket. "We know for a fact that the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League has certain franchises which may be a little weak," Coombs says. "What we (have) got to do now is get our act together, of course, and move very quickly there." The Quebec league's Atlantic division has teams in Halifax, Sydney, Charlottetown, Moncton and Bathurst, N.B. Ten of the remaining 11 teams are in Quebec, and one is in Maine. Courteau says the St. John's issue will be on the agenda when the Quebec league's board of governors meets later this month. If St. John's is able to attract another city's team, a decision to relocate would have to be made by the end of November. Courteau says the league would be looking for travel compensation for teams traveling to St. John's. |
