Looking on the IIHF website, it does not appear that the World Cup of Hockey counts towards the IIHF's overall rankings.

Does anybody know for sure?

Yes, it has nothing to do with IIHF. Its an NHL/NHLPA tournament

Actualyl, on ESPN they said the IIHF sponsors it, along with the NHL and NHLPA, however, my guess is since it uses NHL rules, that's why it doesn't count toward the IIHF.

Well the IIHF might support it, but it doesn't have any control over it. That's why if he wanted to Nabokov could play for Russia, where as in the Olympics and World Championships Nabokov must play for Kazakshtan because he played for them as a junior.

Yep.

IIHF is somehow part of this. But it doesn't count on the IIHF ranks.

So I'm assuming it's IIHF sanctioned, but to them is considered no more than an exhibition tournament.
