What do you use/prefer? Long, short, in-between?

Just curious, as a smaller guy I've always gone with what most people would say is a rather long stick for my height. Some players on my team suggested that I cut down on the length so I did that today on one of my sticks and am going to try it out tomorrow.

Its a pretty big change - I went from just above my nose on skates to about/just below chin area on skates. My deking with the longer stick has always been average and I did sometimes have trouble maintaining control in close. So hopefully this will help and not be too big of a change, I'll probably miss a few passes early on.

I have always followed the rule for sticks. Up to nose on skates, up to chin without skates (shoes or socks)

i use a longer stick than i should, because i like having the extra reach to poke.


i played with a guy who always refused to cut any of his sticks off.

a little longer than that to-chin-on-skates-rule for me.
I always had a better puckhandling with a little longer stick, don't know why. And over the years I've so much accustomed to it, I can't play with a normal length-stick anymore.

Roller hockey, I like to use sticks that are shorter for some reason. For ice hockey, I like a normal size cut.

Yeah that was always my reasoning, as it gave me a legitimate reach even though I was pretty small. But my role has somewhat shifted from being a playmaker, so the added deking ability might be a worthwhile trade off for the reduced reach.

I'll just have to see how it goes, similar to Bumm_Kugel I've always played with the extra length so it might take a while to get used to it.

mine were always cut to just under the eyes when I was on skates. I like having a big stick, i had more control with it then a little one.

However, my arsenal would always consist of one stick that followed "the rule". It would be used in random situations when i felt i could benifit a shorter stick.

My sticks are always just about under my chin on skates, I believe.

I don't need the longer stick for reach, because anything within my radius I grab (i use one hand on the butt of my stick, and swap between right and left a lot, it's hard to describe but it really increases my reach and radius to pass to me, so it helps on D and O) so i've never needed a longer stick, and i'm a stickhandling monster, so that's probably aided by the short stick.

if i played more defensive defenseman, instead of offensive, i might use a longer stick, though/.
