What did you have to do to transfer accounts?

All you gotta do is have your xbox live information on a passport account like how you sign in to xbox.com then put that info on your xbox 360

Just do account recovery. Its on the front screen when you log on to Xbox live.

It should bring up a screen whenever you first turn on your 360 and will ask if you have xbox live currently or want to purchase it. Of course, you choose the one that suits you and like Finch2004 said make sure you have .net passport and have linked it online with Xbox.com. Easy as a slice of cake, 360 cake.
