Illinois wins first game against Mizzou big.
Illinois defeated Missouri by a score of 55-3 to open up their second straight season of defending the national championship. The big players today were Sophomore QB C.R. Schmidt, Senior Running Back Ibrahim Halsey and Sophomore Linebacker Chris Higgins. Schmidt was 24 of 32 throwing for 250 yards while having 4 TD throws and 0 interceptions. "I set a goal at the beginning of the season to throw only 10 interceptions on the whole season. Last year I threw for 20, but this year I feel a lot better because I have that Freshman tag off my back" said the leading Heisman trophy canidate early in the season. Hasley rushed for 152 yards in his first game as the starting running back of his career. "It feels good this year to be the starting running back. I hope to have a great year, I'm not going to set my standards as high as Morris did when he was here, but I think I can have a 1100-1200 yard season. We did everything right today, no turnovers at all, it was a perfect game if you were an Illini fan." Higgins was amazing having 3 sacks and a game-turning interception which he brought it back for a TD. "That seemed to turn around the whole game, Missouri was threatening to make it a 10 point lead on us in the second quarter, but that interception was a game-turning play...they couldn't do anything after that" said Higgins. After the first quarter, it looked like it was going to be a close game with Mizzou leading Illinois 3-0, but early in the second, Mizzou was threatening to make it a 10 point lead over the back-to-back national champs before Higgins took an interception and returned it 79 yards the other way. "Missouri could not do anything after that, they just had a whole bunch of 3 and outs then. It seemed like it was a combination of our defense wanting to play more and with Missouri losing if not all of their confidence" said Ron Turner who improved to an amazing 27-0 in the last 3 years. Illinois scored 55 unanswered as a bunch of 3 and outs and horrible coverage on punt returns gave Illinois awesome field position the rest of the day which made it easy on Schmidt and Co. "Our defense again proved that they are one of the best," said Schmidt. "When their clicking, it makes it very easy for the offense to do their job and put some points on the board. It also helps when your starting at our 40 yard line or in their territory most of the time." On the injury front, Illinois lost 3 players today, the most they have ever lost in one game in 3 years. The most serious injury was when Junior Fullback Josh Marshall had a foot fracture injury that will put him out for 9 weeks. "It's not as serious as we first thought," said Ron Turner. "We thought it would have been an achilles tendon injury, thankfully it wasn't because he would be out for the rest of the season. Were targeting probably the Iowa or Indiana game for his return." Jason Bowman the sensational freshman last year was injured as well, but he will only be out the next game against Louisville. "He had a slight abdominal tear, it could have been a lot more serious like what Hakeem had to deal with last year (Hakeem Lavin the Sophomore Back-up QB this year) where he was injured in the first game and wasn't available until the Orange Bowl. Were thankful that Jason will be all right from this." Chris Norwell the Senior receiver had Back Spasms and will be out for the Louisville game as well. "With the exception of Marshall, these injuries are minor and they will be playing Troy State in a couple of weeks right here. We played ok without these two guys in the game since they went out early, we will just have to try to manage without them." #1 Tennessee was upset by unranked Syracuse 29-24 putting the Fighting Illini up to 2nd in the Coaches poll and 3rd in the Media poll behind Ohio St. and Florida St. Illinois travels to take on #11 Louisville in the Game of the Week. "Louisville is probably going to be our toughest opponent of the year," said Ron Turner. "If we come out of there with a win, it's saying that this is a great team. I felt better this year about this team then the teams a year ago and two years ago when we won the national championships both years. Louisville will be a good match to see how good we really are." __________________ Illinois Fighting Illini, 1-1. Next Game: at UCLA Northern Illinois, 2-0.
