do you have to pay for xbox live to get updates?

is there a way to get user mde rosters like for the pc or ps2 or download ones for free or do you have to pay for xbox live to get them? if you have to pay, then im gonna have a 360 for sale thats a rip off!!!

I'm not 100% but you should have a free silver membership. This would give you updates that will fix bugs. However, I have a strong feeling that you would need a gold membership to get roster updates and other downloadable content. It's only 40 dollars a year and I know thats not chump change but considering each game you own has a entire new life online its like doubling your games.
