Big Hurt in Toronto...

What do you guys think about Frank Thomas getting picked up by the Jays? Im not a huge fan of the decision; the Jays bats were already great last season, and Thomas is only getting older...
I think they could have used the money to invest in a good 2nd Baseman/Shortstop.

Although i guess having a batting order of: Johnson, Rios, Wells, Glaus, Overbay, Thomas cant hurt...

Re: Big Hurt in Toronto...

I think it's a big mistake. I know he hit over 35 hrs this year, but look in the playoffs after game one. He couldn't catch up to the fastball. Also I feel he is due for a big injury of some sort. How much was the deal worth? I prefer Overbay over Thomas. Thomas is also a guy who could cause even more chemistry problems for a team who exploded last year in that way.

Re: Big Hurt in Toronto...

whats the contract? 2years/20 mill? it's sad, i don't know why Riccardi sign Thomas, we got an amazing offense, we need help at our pitching not our hitting, it's stupid

Yeah... It was 2/20 mil, with an option for a 3rd year...

The Jays really dont need a top pitcher... If Halladay, Burnett and Chacin can stay healthy most of the way...
i heard the Jays are going after Gil Meche...

Re: Big Hurt in Toronto...

Ricciardi's a smart guy though, and he needs a DH. I think that Thomas is a lock for 30 homers next year, not so sure about 08, but I don't think that 10 mil per year is that bad.

And OhMyBosh raises a good point: the Jays already have a great staff, they just need to stay healthy. There isn't anyone out on the free agent market who can solve that.

Re: Big Hurt in Toronto...

The problem is Burnett never stays Healthy. They were stupid to give out all that moneyto him last year. I agree they just need a guy who can give them innings. I just don't know if Frank is the answer. He is like 40, and who knows how much he can produce anymore. If they were smart they would maybe just sign a solid hitter or something. Frank is really pushing it, and it shows how panicy they are to win, which I guess is good, but imo it isn't smart.

I have heard the Jays are looking to sign Lugo (2B) too, so if they get him, then sign an average pitcher, i like their chances.

Re: Big Hurt in Toronto...

Julio Lugo is a solid pick up, he hits around 285 and plays solid d. Great signing if they can get it done. Just think You could of spent your money more wisely than thomas

The reason I'm not doubting Ricciardi on the Thomas signing is that JP comes from Billy Beane's Moneyball system, and knows how to run smart baseball club. He wouldn't sign someone like Frank Thomas unless he was confident in him and had the money for it.

Lugo is talked up to much IMO. After he was traded to the Dodgers he couldn't hit for ****.

Re: Big Hurt in Toronto...

I dont think the Jays coulda really picked up and bigtime players apart from Thomas, simply because they are in Canada.

Also, mayeb Richardi has something planned for Vernon Wells... I really hope they dont let him go at the end of next season like Delgado.
