Re: From Short-hop to Shortstop

This story begins at the large campus of California State University at Long Beach. The date is June 13, and the Dirtbags had just lost to the San Diego Toreros in the Super Regionals. James, was very depressed about the loss. He thought that was finally going to be the season they go to Omaha. They had everything going there way. But on this day, James was at his home in Colorado watching the ESPN as the MLB First-Year Player Draft was on. He was a projected top five pick in the draft, and he just hoped that a team where he can move up in and have a chance to play with, will draft him. His whole family was there including his grandma, his aunt and uncles. Everyone was there to see his name be said by MLB commisioner Bud Selig, and see him take the first steps in his major league career. His whole family wasn't succesful at anything. Everyone was proud of him. The phone rang about an hour before the draft - it was his agent Paul Cohen.

"Hey James, I just got off the phone with the Rays, they are feeling really comfortable with taking you with the first pick overall because you have college expierence, but they feel you won't be a fit for years to come. I also talked to the Royals, they said if you fall to them with the third pick, they will think very hard about taking you. The Pirates with the second pick, are pretty much sold on Pedro Alvarez. Look Buddy, I wish you the best, I really hope you get takin' where ya want to. See ya later buddy."

"See ya Paul."

James walked over to his dad who was eating Doritos.

"Hey dad, The Rays and Royals have a lot of interest in me, and the ESPN guy just said if I fall to the Nationals with the 9th pick they will definetly take me. "

"Alright, well, I guess we'll see where you go in about 20 minutes."

James and his family gathered in the living room with the tv set on ESPN. The draft had started and the Rays were on the clock. The anxiety mounted on James as he watched the seconds count down. Finally the clock struck zero and Bud Selig walked up to the stand.

"With the first pick in the 2008 MLB First Year Player Draft The Tampa Bay Rays select.............SS Tim Beckham from Griffin High School in Griffin, Georgia. The Pittsburgh Pirates are now on the clock. James took a deep breath and just thought "that's ok, Tim is a great player it's ok." Is family looked sad he wasn't taking first, but it was expected. The Pirates then took 3B Pedro Alvarez, who was almost a locked in pick. The Royals surprised a lot by taking 1B Eric Hosmer. James was dissapointed, he thought for sure the Royals would take him. Paul Cohen called him.

"Hey bud, sorry about the Royals, they felt they needed power right now. You have a good chance at being takin by the Marlins, they feel you could make the move to 3B if you need to, and the Orioles have a lot of intrest in you.

"Who wants me to play short?" said James

"The Oriolesfor sure, I know the White Sox really like you at short and so do the Nationals. The Astros on the other hand have very little intrest with you at short."

"Okay, The Orioles are on the clock. I'll talk to you later."

"With the fourth pick in the 2008 MLB First-Year Player Draft the Baltimore Orioles select........ SS James Carnes from Long Beach State University in Long Beach, California.

James jumped in the air as he swam through the loud noise of his family cheering. In his mind he thought about all the tough times he went through in his life, and all the times when he was younger how he would think about this day. He was so excited, He was going to be a Baltimore Oriole.

Re: From Short-hop to Shortstop

Orioles' first-round draft pick signs
Carnes to report to Class AA Bowie

BALTIMORE -- Baltimore Orioles top draft pick James Carnes grew an inch and bulked up by 25-30 pounds after entering Long Beach State, where he spent three seasons becoming a standout shortstop.

His bank account grew at a much quicker pace too.

Carnes, 20, agreed to a 3- year $155,000 contract with the Orioles on Wednesday, a day after Baltimore took him fourth overall in the 2008 First-Year Player Draft.

A 6-foot-3, 205-pounder who batted .409 with thirteen home runs and 50 RBIs at Long Beach, Carnes is already scheduled for a Baltimore debut of sorts. He'll undergo a physical on Friday, and on Saturday, he will work out with the Orioles and meet with the media. After returning to Long Beach to close out his college apartment, he'll join Bowie of the Class AA Eastern League.

Orioles general manager Andy MacPhail said he is happy with the quick negotiation of Carnes and the fact second-round pick Charlie Road, a high school left-handed pitcher from Louisville, Ky., also is close to agreeing.

"This kid has a chance to get 200-plus at-bats this year, so that puts him way ahead of the game going into '09," said MacPhail, who said the Orioles may be forced to negotiate longer next season, since it appears their struggles will make them eligible for one of the top overall picks, if not the first one.

Once again, Carnes will follow the footsteps of current Oakland shortstop Bobby Crosby, who signed quickly after being drafted out of Long Beach State in 2003.

No first-round pick in club history has been immediately placed in such an advanced league. Usually, the Orioles would put a high-level high school pick at Rookie-level Bluefield, and a similar college pick at short-season Class A Delmarva Shorebirds.

Carnes is starting at a higher level than the most successful draft choice on the team: Second baseman Brian Roberts was sent to Class A Aberdeen IronBirds, which is in the New York-Penn League but generally has younger players than other leagues.

"It's an advanced league, it's fast, and you're asking a guy to go a league where guys have played for 3 1/2 months," Orioles scouting director Joe Jordan said. "There are going to be some challenges, but we feel he has the ability to handle it and take it on quickly."

Re: From Short-hop to Shortstop

James Carnes never expected to get called to the Majors this year. After he had three days off from his Double-A team in Bowie, Maryland, the shorstop flew to his native Colorado. By the time he made a pit stop to see his parents and drive to see his girlfriend in Denver, he was deep in "offseason mode." That's when Jim Duquette tracked him down. "So are your enjoying your stay in Colorado?" the Orioles executive vice president of baseball operations asked. "Yeah, I guess so," Carnes said, wondering if he had forgotten a commitment to the team. "Well, pack your things. You're going to the Big Leagues."

Carnes' heart skipped a beat. Duquette said he'd call back in five minutes with travel arrangements. That was enough time for Carnes to contact his girlfriend and his father, and to double-check the calendar. It was May 7, Carnes had two games off because the Tides were giving the other shortstop and chance to play and the third was a day off for everybody. To join the Orioles in Baltimore, Carnes had to travel to Denver to pick up some things and then fly to Baltimore, who were having an upcoming series vs. the Rays. Just before the game he signed his first big-league contract. Like all-equipment managers, the Orioles Greg Bandle travels with extra jersey's and nameplates. James could pick any number that was left except 42 for Jackie Robinson, 33 for Eddie Murray, 22 for Jim Palmer, 20 for Frank Robinson, 8 for Cal Ripken of course, 5 for Brooks Robinson, and 4 for Earl Weaver. Carnes wore #5 at Long Beach and for most of his time in the minor leagues, but no. 5 was retired. He was offered No. 2 and he wasn't about to balk at it. "You won't hear me complain about anything," he said. "Just putting on that uniform for the first time, walking onto the field abd taking batting practice. It's hard to describe that expierence. Orioles manager Dave Trembley was one of the first to greet Carnes. next were, Luke Scott, and Nick Markakis. Carnes started at shortstop against the Tampa Bay Rays.He collected his first hit off Matt Garza which was a leadoff single. He went 1 for 3 in the Orioles 4-1 victory in game three of the three game series. Afterward, with his clothes missing from his locker, he realized he had arrived in the Majors just in time to participate in the traditional rookie initiation ritual of wearing a ridiciuolus outfit on the flight home. The rookie got off relatively easy, forced to wear ensembles that looked like Hooters waitress outfits. Though not the original white tank top and orange pants, the skimpy clothing was embarrasing. Carnes, who, is expected to start for the next three games at Boston, said,"although I am a rookie, everyone looks to me as another teammate, and that's an honor."

Re: From Short-hop to Shortstop

Carnes called up from Bowie
Top Pick expected to start at short

BALTIMORE -- Orioles manager Dave Trembley no doubt will discuss on Thursday his excitement over the arrival of shortstop James Carnes the club's No. 1 pick in the 2008 First-Year Player Draft. But after Wednesday's
night's 10-5 loss to the Mets, Trembley announced at the end of an animated postgame press conference that Carnes was being promoted from Double-A Bowie.

Carnes, 21, from Long Beach State, will be celebrated. In his first full professional season, Carnes batted .291 with 13 home runs and 61 RBIs in 104 games at Bowie.Tulowitzki missed action from June 19-30 with a knee problem, but he did participate in the Futures Game during All-Star weekend in New York.

Re: From Short-hop to Shortstop

Major League Debut 8/30/09

Orioles 4, Rays 1

Cabrera carries Orioles past Rays 4-1

BALTIMORE (AP)—One year later, Daniel Cabrera finally appears to have grasped the concept of what it takes to be successful in the major leagues.

Cabrera took a shutout into the seventh inning, and the Baltimore Orioles ended the Tampa Bay Rays’ three-game winning streak with a 4-1 victory Sunday night.

Cabrera proved to be the perfect stand-in. He retired the first seven batters and came within one out of blanking the Rays through seven innings in his finest performance in the big leagues.

"I just felt I was more in control, not getting flustered in crucial situations and just trusting myself and making a pitch when I needed to,” said Cabrera.

“I can tell you Cabrera showed improvement from the last time we’ve seen him,” Trembley said. “He made some big pitches when he had to, but his mound presence, his poise, his ability to make big pitches was good for him and good for the team."

Brian Roberts went 3 for 4 with an RBI and scored two runs. And, David Wright went 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run.

Baltimore led 4-0 before the Rays scored a run in the fourth. A two-out solo home run by Carlos Pena, his 29th of the year.

George Sherrill, the fourth Baltimore reliever, got three outs for his 28th save.

Tampa Bay’s Matt Garza (2-2) allowed four runs, nine hits and no walks in 5innings.The right-hander had gone at least six innings in his previous three starts this season.

“I am very disappointed with myself because I basically took myself out of the game. I was affected by the small strike zone and I let it get into my head,” Garza said. “All the hard work that we put in to get to this point, we took a giant step backward. I am definitely not happy with what happened. And I am 100 percent responsible for this loss.”

“There was a lot of emotion involved today,” manager Joe Maddon said. “I don’t know if that had something to do with it. We have been very emotional the last three days. I just think we got off to a bad start pitching-wise. It was a nice little three-game run, and let’s start another one.”

Garza gave up a leadoff single to Brian Roberts, and then a double to David Wright which scored Roberts. Nick Markakis then moved Wright to third and rookie James Carnes drove him in with an infield hit.
