Flashing a rom a that's not made for the tablet\phone

Just bought an Ideapad A1000 quite cheap for my next trip and it's stuck with Android 4.1

Can't find any roms(or official updates) to even 4.2 or 4.3... I guess that flashing a rom that's not made for it could be problematic but what if it has similar hardware?

I could work but it depends, I would not try it unless it's confirmed to work or you could end up with a bricked tab. Have you tried xda-developers yet?
