![]() The “run first, run second, then throw” mentality that has been the staple of the Gopher’s success over the last 10 years may be coming to an end. With the All-American faces of running back Laurence Maroney and center Greg Eslinger no longer draped in maroon and gold, the offensive firepower has dwindled significantly, leaving question marks in the backfield and an inexperienced line. Gary Russell, who led the team in touchdowns last season with 18, was set to inherit the running back slot until he was recently declared academically ineligible. That leaves Mason and company with junior Amir Pinnix as the next best option. When Pinnix has seen action, he has been impressive. Filling in for the injured Laurence Maroney last season, he carried the Gophers to a win over Michigan State in East Lansing, rushing for 206 yards on 32 carries. As has been the case for the Gophers in recent years, it will take more than one back to carry the load in Mason’s system. Juniors Justin Valentine or Brylee Callender will have to step up in that second back role this season. The key for the Gopher running backs this year is not to stun the crowd, but to make senior quarterback Bryan Cupito look stunning. Cupito, the leader and talent on this team, will be the shining knight on this once upon a time juggernaut Gopher offense. After posting impressive numbers during his second season at the helm, Cupito continued to look sharp this spring and he’s coming into the fall with a lot of confidence, many expectations, but little help. Having only two reliable receivers in junior Ernie Wheelwright and senior Logan Payne, Air Gopher will take flight an engine short from truly soaring. This will be a different brand of football than Gopher fans have grown accustomed to.On the opposite side of the ball, and talent pool, we find a group that managed to finish 90th in the nation in total defense last year, giving up over 400 yards per game. The Gopher D will no longer have Maroney’s 100-yard dashes covering their backs. With Sophomore Steve Davis being the rock and only returning starter on the line, this defense is desperate for some leadership and unity. Junior Dom Barber is expected to have a breakout season when he steps up and wins the free safety spot. With the speed and young talent that makes up the defensive secondary, the Gophers will be markedly better against the pass. From top to bottom, the Gophers will have new players, new coaches, and maybe most importantly new schemes. Unfortunately what is not new is the all too familiar feeling that no lead is ever safe.
