FALCONS FALL TO VOLUNTEERS 31-28
By Marc Stevens Special AF Falcons Reporter
Memphis, Tennessee The season is now upon us and what a beautiful day it was in Memphis. I spent the day with the Falcons before they headed up to Volunteer Stadium a lot of the guys were really excited to start their season off against a team like the Volunteers. I can see the excitement in the guys, they knew they were the underdogs going into todays game, I mean why wouldn't they be, when was the last time a team a team from the Mountain West Conference become a heavy favorite against the VOLS.........yeah exactly. This didn't stop the Falcons. They were eager in turning all of the naysayers the other way. This could easily be a great start to the Falcons season with a win against a ranked opponent. The guys were set as the head coach came into the room in which all the guys were settled. He gave a speech to let them know what to expect when they get to the stadium. I was looking at the guys and they were open eyed paying close attention to the man standing in front of them. It was quite, the players listened while I looked around the room. Once coach stated his last sentence it seemed to as set off a bomb as the guys gave out a big yell as they headed out onto the buses on their way to the stadium. I had the honor in sitting in on the coaches bus. The feeling in the air was business. All the talk was about the Tennessee Volunteers and their offense. The coaching staff felt that their defense, specially their secondary would have to play really well to not get beat against the recievers the Vols have, one mistake and it is over. "They are fast and atheletic," the head coach told me. "They have a young quarterback whom really needs no space to put the ball in play, he can be dangerous". From talking with the coaches I can feel that they really want this game. I closed my book and sat looking outside of the window until we go to the stadium....... 20 minutes later..... We arrive at the stadium. I have never been to Tennessee so I for one was in aww when I saw this place, I can only imagine what the guys feel. I grabbed my bag and headed over to the player buses where I see some of the guys heading off. No expression on their faces just guys knowing that they have a huge task ahead of them. It was almost an hour till kickoff, the guys went into the locker room and started to get dressed. Once dressed they walked onto the field as the stadium was already filled to capacity. Chants from fans towards the Falcons as they walk out onto the field were kinda shocking to me, the Volunteer fans were really cordial in this matter, maybe cause we are the Air Force Academy........not sure but all in all they were fantastic. The guys came walking off the field and into the locker room for one last pep talk. [ The Game ] The captains took the field for the Falcons as they met up at mid field with the Volunteer captains. The referee as I can see stood there talking to the guys. He then showed them a coin and tossed it in the air. By the pumps of the fist from the Volunteers that to me signaled they won the toss......and they did as the referee announced it. The Falcons captains came back pumping their fist and getting their fans that traveled from Colorod Springs to get them up off their feet. The Kickoff team took the field. The kickoff was short as the Falcons went down and stopped the Vols at their own 25. The defense took the field for their first stand. What a job they did! They had penetration right from the start of the game stopping the Volunteers running back Shrine. The defense did what they had to do as they stopped the Vols on their first drive giving the ball to the offense to see what they can accomplish. Air Force whom is known for their flexbone formation started off shaky. On a 4th down and 11 the Falcons were gutys as they had the ball on the 50. They went for it and quarterback Matt Hayden connected to one of his recievers for a gain of 14 for a first down. From there the Falcons offense was clicking driving the ball up the field as with 3:37 in the first the Falcons scored the first touchdown as running back Tyronne Scruggs got the pitch off a triple option play to the right for a six yard touchdown run. After their first touchdown run the team knew it is a four quarter game and anything can happen. Soon, the Falcons would find that out. The Falcons defense held on strong as the Vols threatened down field. Falcons 'd' held up as they held the Vols at the line as they were facing a 3rd and goal. The Vols handed it off to running back Shrine as he was popped right away by the Falcons linebackers to stop them and making it fourth and goal. The Vols did manage to get on board with a 38 yard feild goal by Ingram. After the field goal it wouldn't take long for the Falcons to answer back. The running game worked out well for the team in the first half as it gave the Falcons their second touchdown of the game coming in the second quarter with Travis Fletcher this time taking it from 46 yards out. After the run the Falcons were looking on top of the world. The Vols though did manage to scrape in a touchdown as Harris hauled in a 57 yard pass from White to cut the lead at halftime to 21 to 10. Start of the second half and it would signal what the half was going to be like for the Falcons. Moving the ball well on the ground the offensive coordinator decided to come out of halftime throwing first, this would turn out to be a costly mistake. Hayden threw a pass over the middle and it was picked off by the Vols. That would be one of three interceptions that Hayden would through on the day. The Volunteers after getting the ball back simply started running on all cylinders. The Vols scored 14 in the third period to take cut the Falcons lead down 28 to 24. In the final period the Falcons defense seemed to have it locked. Talking about before with the secondary not getting burned.....well they fell apart with 55 seconds left in the game White found Harris for a 49 yard touchdown pass which would be the game winner. The Falcons were stunned, they had the game right where they wanted it then they just feel asleep, relaxed. What was great game for both teams would be a game that the Falcons would definately have to look on both sides of the ball. Next up the Falcons travel to Wyoming. This marks the teams first conference game. ![]() First Quarter Scruggs, AF 6 yard run, 7-0 AF Second Quarter 3:37 Harris, Tenn 38 yard FG, 7-3 AF 1:40 Harris, Tenn 57 yard pass from White, 10-7 Tenn 1:13 Fletcher, AF 46 yard run, 14-10 AF 0:03 Halterman, AF 46 yard pass from Hayde, 21-10 AF Third Quarter 3:00 Shrine, Tenn 4 yard run, 17-21 AF 0:40 Halterman, AF 12 yard pass from Hayden, 28-17 AF 0:06 Carter, Tenn 64 yard pass from White, 24-28 AF Fourth Quarter 0:55 Harris, Tenn 49 yard pass from White, 31-28 Tenn TEAM // PLAYER STATS Passing Hayden, AF 11-19 188 yards 2 touchdowns 3 interceptions White, Tenn 14-29 287 yards 3 touchdowns 2 interceptions Rushing Hayden, AF 22 attempts 93 yards Fletcher, AF 4 attemtps 46 yards 1 touchdown Banks, AF 7 attemtps 28 yards Scruggs, AF 4 attemtps 14 yards 1 touchdown Shine, Tenn 17 attempts 49 yards 1 touchdown White, Tenn 1 attempt 0 yards Recieving Fletcher, AF 2 catches 37 yards Banks, AF 2 catches 9 yards Halterman, AF 2 catches 58 yards 2 touchdowns *player of game* Paul, AF 2 catches 39 yards Dingle, AF 1 catch 23 yards McCutcheon, AF 1 catch 16 yards McBride, Tenn 6 catches 123 yards 1 touchdown Harris, Tenn 3 catches 78 yards 1 touchdown Carter, Tenn 2 catches 77 yards 1 touchdown Defense Walker, AF 5 tackles 2 TFL Baker, AF 4 tackles 1 interception Adkins, Tenn 7 tackles 1 interception Hampton, Tenn 4 tackles 1 interception 1 Force Fumble Total Offense Air Force - 364 Tennessee - 336 Turnovers Air Force - 5 Tennessee - 2 Time of Possession Air Force - 11:23 Tennessee - 8:42 __________________ Last edited by mikesa_tx : 11-15-2006 at 05:26 PM. |

Re: United States Air Force Academy Falcons Dynasty
![]() By Mark Stevens Special AF Falcons Reporter Wyoming, War Memorial Stadium The Falcons were coming off of a devastating loss to the #18 team in the country last week in the Tennessee Volunteers. A lot of talk around campus and through-out the country are pleased with the way the Air Force Falcons played against the tough Volunteers. That week was gone and now we see ourselves on week 4. Week 4 of the 2006 football season the Air Force Falcons traveled to Wyoming to take on the Cowboys in the opening of the Mountain West Conference. [ The Game ] The Falcons did not win the toss as they started off on defense first. The team at the start seemed to try to get the feel of the Cowboys. The secondary which during the Volunteers did not have much success seemed to have carried their play over in the first couple of minutes against the Cowboys. The Cowboys connected on a deep pass and was down at the five with a first and goal. The Falcons front line as they did against the Volunteers stopped them from scoring as they pushed them back. The Cowboys on fourth down connected with a 28 yard feild goal from A. Christian with 1:27 left in the first quarter. With the score 3-0 the Falcons were eager to get the ball on offense. Once they did it did not take them long to do what they do. The Falcons ran the ball as they are known to do but it would be the passing that would come to play during this game. The Falcons struck on a 8 yard pass from quarter back Matt Hayden to A.J. Banks for six. The kick by Kilpatrick was good with the Falcons taking the lead 7-3 at the end of the first quarter. ![]() Junior quarterback Matt Hayden running towards one of his two running touchdowns. From that point on the Falcons would go on a tear led by junior quarterback Matt Hayden who did it all, from running the ball to throwing touchdown passes. The Falcons opened up the flood gaates in the second with three touchdowns one 25 yard run by Matt Hayden and two touchdown passes from Hayden to Scruggs and Fletcher. Falcons had a good lead at the half 28-3 going into the final two periods. The Falons would strike first in the third with a 75 yard pass to Fletcher, making it his second of the game from Hayden. Fletcher would have a career day as he caught just four passes for 201 yards and 2 touchdowns. The Cowboys would be held with no touchdowns until the final minutes of the fourth quarter. The Final score of a game that was completely dominated by the Falcons was 42 to 10. Matt Hayden had his best game of the year passing with 288 yards on 11 of 18 passing for four touchdowns and no interceptions. The Falcons are now (1-1) overall and (1-0) in conference play. Next up for the Falcons will be their home opener against the New Mexico Lobos, their second conference game. Good win for the Falcons now we take on the Lobos!!! ![]() Code:
