Bulls fire Cartwright
From Chicagosports.com
November 24, 2003, 11:20 AM CST The Bulls have fired head coach Bill Cartwright after a little less than two years as the team's coach. And GM John Paxson said that may not be the only change. Assistant coach Pete Meyers will coach the team on an interim basis. The Bulls' next game is Tuesday in Dallas. Paxson, the Bulls Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations, said he expects to hire a new coach within the next week. In a statement released Monday morning, Paxson said: "I knew there would be difficult times in this job, but none is harder than replacing a friend. I have known Bill Cartwright as a teammate, as a colleague and as a friend for nearly as long as I've been in professional basketball. I admire his hard work and his efforts and loyalty here. He will always be a Bull. "The decision to relieve Bill at this time was a basketball decision. The team is underperforming and we have to find ways to win, period. I am not satisfied with the team's start this season and changes have to be made. This represents the first change, but not necessarily the last." Cartwright took over as the Bulls head coach on Dec. 28, 2001, succeeding Tim Floyd. The team was 51-100 since then, including a disappointing 4-10 this season. Cartwright played 17 years in the NBA, including six seasons with the Bulls (1989-1994). He was a co-captain on the Bulls championships teams in 1991, 1992 and 1993. |
