good read on Moss, for all you haters
All business this season
Chuck Landon Sportswriter Charleston Daily Mail Saturday, July 19, 2003 Randy Moss is often portrayed as a malcontent, who doesn't care about his hometown or working hard, but is that true? It certainly didn't sound accurate at an early morning press conference during the annual "Randy Moss Kids Appreciation Day" autograph signing session today at Laidley Field, which also included Chicago Bear Bobbie Howard and St. Louis Ram Chris Massey, both former Kanawha Valley prep stars. For instance, the Minnesota Vikings star wide receiver was offended that some NFL stars wouldn't join him for the event. "I tried to get some other guys to come out," said the Rand native. "I guess they were too big for their britches. They were too busy. I want to show how much I appreciate everything. This is for the kids." Although Moss declined to name the NFL players who turned down his invitation, he was openly disturbed by the snub. "I don't want to name names and get something started," he said, "but when somebody can't return a phone call, I don't know where they're coming from. As little as this may seem, it's giving back. It's touching." Moss also put to rest the claims that he doesn't like to work hard. Sources indicate that the All Pro receiver has worked more diligently during this off season than ever. "As far as getting to my workouts, I got into it earlier than ever," said the 6 foot 4, 205 pound Moss, who appeared visibly bigger. "I started back in March. I was switching on and off, going to Minnesota and my training facility in Florida. I might have lifted more than I have since I've been in the league. I'm ready to go. I'm anxious." The mere fact that Moss has to defend his work ethic is noteworthy in light of what the 26 year old has accomplished in only five NFL seasons. Moss set an NFL record for most receptions in a player's first five seasons with 414, topping Marvin Harrison's 413 from 1996-2000. He also set an NFL record as the only wide out to record 1,000 yard seasons in his first five seasons. His 6,743 yards in his first five seasons set an NFL record, topping Jerry Rice's 6,136. The former DuPont High School star also set an NFL record for fewest games to reach 5,000 career receiving yards. Moss accomplished the feat in 59 games while Jerry Rice did it in 61 games. Moss has been named NFC Offensive Player of the Week four times in his career. He led the NFL in receiving touchdowns in 1998 and 2000 and led the NFC in receiving yards in 1999 (1,413) and 2002 (1,347). He also led the NFC in receptions in 2002 (106). Despite being depicted as an underachiever, the former Marshall All American has not missed a game in his five year career and has started 75 of his 80 career games. He has caught a pass in each of his 80 career games, a streak that ranks fourth in team history. He earned Pro Bowl appearances in 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2002. Since entering the NFL in 1998, Moss has 61 touchdowns in 80 games (60 receiving, 1 punt return) and has thrown two touchdown passes. Only St. Louis Ram running back Marshall Faulk has more touchdowns since 1998 with 79. In 38 career games against the NFC North/Central Division, Moss has 203 catches for 3,550 yards (17.4 avg.) and 30 touchdowns. Minnesota is 29-14 in games when Moss has a touchdown. He has caught a touchdown in five of his six career playoff games. And he ranks second in team history with 60 receiving touchdowns, trailing Cris Carter (110). Despite all those accomplishments, one of his biggest thrills is still seeing a young fan wear a "Randy Moss, No. 84" jersey. "I'm still touched and flattered," he said, "when I see kids wearing my jersey." |

Moss is pretty much everything I dislike in a player, yet I don't dislike him. I can't really explain it. He's as good as he wants to be, which can be great - people usually dislike great players, unless they're sporting their team colors.
