In the real NHL, the reason why a lot of teams shifted to defense first, was because it was easier to win by playing defense than by playing offense. In NHL2005 the balance was quite like this, although if you were truly offensively good you could overpower defense, but if you were truly defensively good, you could make it very tough to score. In 06 it was WAY easier to play super offensively than defensively, and while its not as bad in 07, its still pretty bad compared to 2005.

So by this logic, its out of whack compared to the real NHL's offense vs. defense balance.
