Didn't see a thread on this..Ducks trade Gerber
ANAHEIM - The Mighty Ducks of Anaheim announced that the club has acquired defenceman Tomas Malec and a third round selection in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft (74th overall) from the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for goaltender Martin Gerber.
Malec, 22, was drafted by Florida in the third round (64th overall) of the 2001 NHL Entry Draft. The 6-2, 200-pound defenseman was acquired by Carolina from Florida with Bret Hedican, Kevyn Adams and a conditional second round draft pick (2003) in exchange for Sandis Ozolinsh and Byron Ritchie on Jan. 16, 2002. He appeared in his first 41 NHL games with Carolina in 2002-2003, scoring two points with 43 penalty minutes. Malec played in two games with Carolina last season, going scoreless. He spent the rest of the season with Lowell of the American Hockey League, scoring 20 points with 101 penalty minutes in 74 games. Gerber appeared in 32 NHL games with Anaheim last season, finishing with an 11-12-4 record, a 2.26 goals-against average (GAA) and .918 save percentage (SV%). He played in his first NHL season with the Ducks during the 2002-2003 season, recording a 1.95 GAA and .929 SV% (6-11-3). Gerber, 29, was drafted by Anaheim in the eighth round (232nd overall) of the 2001 NHL Entry Draft. He played with the Swiss National Team for two seasons (1999-2001) and professionally in Sweden during the 2001-2002 season. http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/news_story.asp?id=88094 |

Weekes really needed someone that could play some minutes last year. Gerber looked better than Giguere at times (although Jiggy looked pretty rough most of the year).

Very nice trade I must say from a Carolina standpoint.
Malec has had 3 or 4 oppertunities to stick with the big club, and he really didnt impress anyone this past year, getting beat out by Rourke, Fast and an injured St. Jacques for time. He had played a bit of time in '03, but that was only due to injury and not having anyone else. Gerber is good enough to be a starter on some teams. Weekes may not sign for what JR wants to pay, so this gives Carolina a cheap option should Weekes holdout. Also, if Weekes does sign, it gives Carolina the tandem they need. Storr was really disapointed last year and they relied on Weekes so much, that he tailed off during the last part of the year. EDIT: The 3rd is tough to give up, but Carolina has 5 picks in the first 62 so I guess it's not too bad. __________________ ![]() 1981-2005 1731 Games Played 549 Goals 1249 Assists 1798 Points The model of consistency. |
