Kyle's Plymouth Whalers Franchise !
:).
Extreme boredom leads to this.. I've been working on this franchise a lot so I felt the need to make a story thread on it, because I think it's fun. I had another story but after I got NHLEHM I stopped playing the freeware. And, now that I have a general feel of what I'm doing, I suppose I'll give it another try. I was just going to make this a strictly OHL franchise, but it occured to me while writing this that (if any of you actually read it), you'll have no idea who any of the players are in two or three seasons, since most of the well-known ones will have already graduated out of juniors. So, I decided to make this one a little more interesting. I'm going to try to win a Memorial Cup with Plymouth, then graduate on to the NHL and win a Stanley Cup there. Of course, this jump is pretty hard, so I'll probably take over a Euro team before going to the NHL. We'll just see how it works out, but my goal is to win as much as possible ^_^. I'm also looking to become the GM of an international team. Right now I'm in my second season (2004-2005) after a satisfactory first season with Plymouth. We went 36-22-9-1 in the first season, good enough for 2nd place in the West. The Quarterfinals brought the Windsor Spitfires, who were defeated in 7 games. In the next round, London defeated us in 5 games, three of which were decided by just one goal. London went on to the Memorial Cup with Cape Breton, host Moncton, and Kelowna. The Kelowna Rockets ended up winning it all, defeating Moncton in the championship game. And here are my transactions leading up to this point, and along the way I'll kind of review them based on how my first season went. 8.18.03 - Traded G Ryan Nie and LW Steve Philips to Brampton for G Kevin Couture. Bad move. I based this off of my first OHL franchise where Couture owned. In this one, Couture did a little less ownage and lost the starting job, whereas Ryan Nie posted the best numbers in the OHL. Whoops. 8.29.03 - Signed defensive prospect Mark Mitera from the NTDP. He was my only prospect and he was good enough to play, so this ended up being a good move. 9.24.03 - Traded D Erik Lundmark to Ottawa for D Robbie Lawrence. Decent trade. Lundmark was an extra defenseman who I wasn't too fond of, so I figured this trade wouldn't hurt. Lawrence only played nine games for me but ultimately was traded for a better player. 10.1.03 - Traded LW James Neal and D Ryan McGinnis to London for LW Dylan Hunter and D Danny Syvret. I jumped all over this deal but it didn't turn out as good as I hoped. Hunter posted subpar numbers while Syrvet was in and out of the lineup. McGinnis didn't do too great for London, but Neal recorded 35 points in 32 games before he suffered a season ending injury. He came back in time to score several key goals against us in the playoffs, though. 10.28.03 - Traded LW Sean Thompson to Belleville for D Kyle Sonnenburg. Good trade. An extra forward for a top four defenseman. 11.15.03 - Traded C Brent Mahon to Peterborough for LW Shawn Futers. Decent trade. Neither had a spectacular season, but I did get rid of another '84 that would have been lost after this season anyway. 11.19.03 - Traded D Michael Knight and G Dan Miller to Oshawa for LW Clay McFadden. I don't remember why I did this one. I think I was short on forwards or something. But it ended up working out okay, though, as just days later I fixed it :). 11.21.03 - Traded G Kevin Couture and LW Clay McFadden to Mississauga for G David Shantz. Couture was slumping, Shantz was owning.. I just couldn't say no. 11.25.03 - Traded D Robbie Lawrence to Peterborough for C Corey Gault. Good trade. I was low on forwards and Lawrence wasn't really playing. And that was it for the season. Now to the offseason ! First off was the draft. As expected, C Peter LeBlanc went first overall to the Owen Sound Attack, followed closely by LW Matthew Schmidt (Barrie), D Cole Dixon (Kingston), C Darren Lambert (Saginaw), and D Aaron Henderson (Oshawa). My picks: 014 - C Doug Cox - Toronto Red Wings (GTHL) 60 GP - 34 G 41 A 75 PTS - +58 - 126 PIM 034 - LW Josh Marcoux - Toronto Red Wings (GTHL) 58 GP - 37 G 39 A 76 PTS - +59 - 125 PIM 054 - D Colin Wright - Mississauga Rebels (GTHL) 52 GP - 13 G 16 A 29 PTS - +21 - 172 PIM 074 - LW Jim Weaver - Peterborough Bees (OPJAHL) 59 GP - 18 G 22 A 40 PTS - +6 - 96 PIM 094 - D Marc Young - Northern Michigan Black Bears (NOJHL) 55 GP - 11 G 27 A 38 PTS - +25 - 173 PIM 114 - D Andrew Desmet - North Bay Trappers AAA (GNML) 61 GP - 15 G 45 A 60 PTS - +28 - 190 PIM 134 - G Darcy Aubin - Mississauga Senators (GTHL) 58 GP - 32-22-4 - 2.02 GAA - 0.915 - 7 SOs 154 - LW Rob Harrison - HoneyBaked (MWEHL) 60 GP - 31 G 42 A 73 PTS - +67 - 74 PIM 165 - C Justin Belanger - Michigan Ice Dogs AAA (MWEHL) 53 GP - 11 G 14 A 25 PTS - +15 - 53 PIM 174 - C Josh Leroux - Georgetown Raiders (OPJAHL) 60 GP - 22 G 30 A 52 PTS - +8 - 159 PIM 176 - L Stan Richardson - Bancroft Hawks (OPJAHL) 61 GP - 33 G 37 A 70 PTS - +25 - 207 PIM 194 - D Mario Knudson - Hamilton Reps AAA (ALL) 62 GP - 7 G 12 A 19 PTS - -8 - 71 PIM 214 - C Francois Crowder - Mississauga Rebels (GTHL) 61 GP - 11 G 15 A 26 PTS - +8 - 70 PIM 254 - D/F Jeff Harvey - Abitibi Eskimos (NOJHL) 62 GP - 10 G 37 A 47 PTS +17 - 77 PIM 274 - D Curtis Cameron - Strathroy Rockets (WJBL) 59 GP - 9 G 36 A 45 PTS - +7 - 140 PIM 294 - D Terry Walker - Sarnia Blast (WJBL) 60 GP - 20 G 49 A 69 PTS - +63 - 73 PIM Wee.. Long draft, I know. =\. But now to the fun stuff, offseason transactions. 5 players taken in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft: Vaclav Meidl - 1st round, 11th overall to the Montreal Canadiens. John Vigilante - 3rd round, 76th overall to the Atlanta Thrashers. David Shantz - 4th round, 94th overall to the Toronto Maple Leafs (rights then traded to New Jersey) Gino Pisellini - 5th round, 142nd overall to the Colorado Avalanche. Rane Carnigie - 8th round, 224th overall to the New York Islanders. And now roster movements. First off, I lost several key players. Top center Ryan Ramsey, fourth-liner Nick Vernelli, and goaltender Paul Drew all left the team because of age. Paul Drew is currently the backup goalie for the Columbus Blue Jackets, while Ramsey and Vernelli have yet to find work. Defenseman Richard Power was let go because he was the odd man out in a group of four overagers. To make matters worse, Chicago had offered top defenseman James Wisniewski a nice contract, so my captain was off to the NHL. However, a few great (and lucky) trades have turned this offseason into a good one. The first was the most lucrative trade I've ever been offered in NHL:EHM, which I had to take. London offered D Marc Methot for recently drafted goalie Darcy Aubin. So, just like that, I have a top defenseman again. And here are the rest of my moves thus far: 7.6.04 - Traded a 2nd round pick in 2006 to London for G Jeff MacDougald. This turned out to be a weird trade, as I originally offered defenseman Craig Cescon and the second for MacDougald, but London countered with just the second. Oh well .7.10.04 - Traded LW Dylan Hunter and a 2nd round pick in 2005 to St. Mike's for RW Jack Skille. Skille only played nine games last season but he's easily one of the most skilled (no pun intended.. well, actually, it was intended.. i could have just as easily used talented) players on my team. And he's only 17. 7.22.04 - My last move of the offseason was signing Mattias Ritola, a Swedish forward I took in the import draft. I took him only because he was the most skilled player available, and even though he was making more with Frolunda, he signed with me. I had to release struggling foreigner Jonas Fiedler to make room for Ritola, though. Fiedler has found work in the Czech leagues, so all is fine. And that's where I'm at now. I'll leave you with the lineup for the upcoming season, coming in the next post because of length. I'll try to keep my posts shorter so updates will be more frequently and easier to read. Comments welcome, even though I won't get any :). |

I don't like them, but they sure like me.. I offered Cescon and the 2nd for MacDougald and they countered with just the second <3. So yeah, if they're going to continuously offer them to me for very little I'll take them. ^_^

The Syvret/Hunter trade sucked until I traded Hunter for Jack Skille :). Who wouldn't accept Methot for a long-shot goalie prospect? Not to mention at the time London had Coleman, MacDougald, AND Ryan Mcdonald.. And they drafted two goalies that are better than the one they got from me. Anyways, soon they'll run themselves into the ground. So shh. |

The computer that this franchise is on is currently on the fritz and will most likely end up being reformatted, so this save will be lost. I've decided to just do a new franchise in this thread, but I've already done the Whalers three or four times, though I haven't made it past my second season. I can't decide whether or not to try the Whalers again, try a new team, or move into a new league, though I don't know much about leagues outside of North America. I'll leave it open to any suggestions and just do whatever sounds best.. So, suggest away ^_^. |
