My current rig is an i5 4570 3.2ghz, with a 1060-6gb and 16gb RAM. The RAM is in four 4gb sticks, taking up all the slots on the mobo. Probably still pretty far off, but at some point this year I'm going to try to do a significant upgrade. I'm pretty sure that if my CPU isn't already the weak link, it definitely would be if I put in a high end GPU. But, my motherboard is an LGA1150 socket, which certainly limits CPU possibilities at this point.

So, if I were to get an RTX20xx card, would that really be worth it without also upgrading the CPU? And If I'm upgrading the CPU, would anything available in the LGA1150 socket even be a worthwhile upgrade? Or should I get a new mobo for a higher end CPU?

You could get a used 4790k (or a 4770K, if the price is really good), but these days even the R5 3600 would murder anything on a 1150 mobo.

That's what I figured. I'll have to upgrade the mobo to get a better CPU. And at that point, I'll probably be replacing all those RAM sticks too. Thinking maybe I'll just make a whole new system. Save money at first by putting my 1060 in the new rig and upgrading later. The old rig can keep everything but the GPU, go back to using the i5 integrated graphics and be a classic games box. Then it can even have the 1060 back when I get something better for the new rig.

Mmk. Gonna be a big project, but I suspected it would be. That's what happens when you pretty much max out your hardware possibilities on a dated mobo.

I think you've got decent rig - for 1080p, unless you're into 2K there's no need in upgrade ATM IMO

@gerygo: No really. At this point those specs can get you at best medium settings with below 60fps dips in current games at 1080p. I have a 4770k, 32gb ram and a 1070Ti and I can't set everything to max while keeping stable 60fps at 1920x1200 res.

3600 + mobo setup should be cheap and it'll set you up nicely when the newer gpu rolls in. I'd imagine that newer games have finally been hitting the 4 threads cpu, I know is not a good comparison but the 2500k I had ran doggo at the end.

@gerygo: I am only using 1080p right now, and my system does handle most games pretty well. But, newer ones are starting to get to where I can't max them and keep 60fps anymore. Plus, at some point this year, I want to be VR ready.

And you can turn the old mobo/cpu/ram into a server!

Spinning up a NAS with Unraid was basically the best thing I ever did for my digital life.
