Betting 101

Ok, there seems to be a bit of confusion every now and again about what people are betting on, how to bet spreads, and what certain things mean, so we can use this to clarify certain things about VBookie, and betting in general.

Spread - The spread is the amount of points that a given team is laying, or getting. The favorite in a game is always - points, and the underdog will be + points.

Example - New England Patriots -7.5 vs. Oakland Raiders +7.5. This means that to win the bet, the Patriots must win the game by 8 or more points. For the Raiders to win the bet they need to win the game outright, or lose by 7 or less.

Over/Under - The Over/Under line is the total amount of points (or goals/runs depending on the sport) that both teams will combine for in a given game.

Example - Oakland A's vs. New York Yankees. Over 8.5. Under 8.5. For the over to win there must by at least 9 runs scored between the 2 teams, and for the under to win they must combine for 8 or less.

Moneyline - In sports where there are spreads, there are sometimes also moneyline bets. This means that you are taking better or worse odds (depending on which way you bet) that the team you select will win the game outright.

Example Virgina Tech vs. NC State in NCAAFB. The spread is VaTech -3.5, but you can also take odds on VaTech just winning the game, or NC State to win the game. Since VaTech is the favorite, they will have worse odds....-170 (.59) to win, and NC State will be somewhere around +140 (1.40). The -170 (.59) means that if you bet on VaTech to win and you win your bet, you will receive your original wager back, plus 59% more. If you bet $100, you will get $159 back. If you bet on the underdog (NC State) and you get +140 (1.40), this means that if you bet $100, you will get $240 back if you win.

Odds - The odds are what amount of money you will be paid out for each bet. In baseball, where we only use moneylines, the odds differ from game to game. In sports where spreads are used, for the most part the odds will be -110 (or 0.95).

Example - St Louis Cardinals -170, @ NY Mets +150. If you bet $17 on the Cardinals, and they win the game, you will receive your original $17 back + $10. If you bet $10 on the Mets, and they win, you will get back the original $10 you bet + $15. I see a lot of people asking if they bet on a certain game they won't even make their money back. Remember, you ALWAYS receive your initial bet back if you win, plus the odds. There is no possible bet you'd ever make where you couldn't make money. The only time that would happen is if a bookie wanted to close a game to re-open betting on other games. The odds will say (.0), and it makes it so there is no reason to bet on that event.

That's about all of the things I can think of off the top of my head, I'm sure many more will come to me, and they will be added here. Please check this thread when you have a question, and if the answer isn't already in here, ask it in here.

Quick question.

Can we bet on NCAA games? Or is this completely illegal regardless if the money is meaningless?

Yes. If you bet 1000 and win 200, you get to keep your 1000 plus the 200 you won.

Re: Betting 101

Can we get more options for betting on NHL Games please? Example: over/under, first to score.
