Madden 09 Ratings Ratings - QB

As SG continues to reveal the ratings for each position, I will follow those articles up with how well I think EA's doing. In other words, that title is not a typo; these are the ratings for the Madden 09 ratings, QB style. To see the entire list for yourself, check out Madden 09: Quarterback Ratings

Highest...
Overall - Peyton Manning/Tom Brady (99)
Speed - Vince Young (90)
Awareness - Peyton Manning/Tom Brady (100)
Throw Power - Tom Brady (99)
Throw Accuracy - Peyton Manning/Tom Brady (99)

Lowest...
Overall - Chris Redman (76)
Speed - Carson Palmer/Chris Redman (54)
Awareness - Tarvaris Jackson (56)
Throw Power - Chad Pennington (82)
Throw Accuracy - Tarvaris Jackson (78)

What they did right...
  • Ben Roethlisberger with a 95 overall after an under-the-radar 32 TD's (3rd NFL) to 11 INT's and the league's second best QB rating of 104.1. A lot of people say Roethlisberger just manages the game, but he lost that role last year, and still continued with great success.
  • Drew Brees receiving a 94 overall. The Saints took the brunt end of a lot of punishment last year, mainly due to their success in 06 and with Reggie Bush still not living up to his hype, but Brees quietly put up solid numbers with a very respectable 28 TD's, and throwing the most passes (652) and still having the 3rd best completion percentage (67.5) is a pretty impressive feat.
  • Chad Henne with a 77 overall was definitely accurate. A lot of people are saying that him and Booty shouldn't even be close because of when they got drafted, but in reality, that makes no difference. Henne had a weak senior year, and although he showed flashes, he was too inconsistent to be in the 80's right out of the gates.
  • Derek Anderson with a 96 throw power. The guy's got a rocket. I don't know how many people have caught the Brownies play last season, but every time I saw Anderson slinging the rock, you better believe his receivers were catching it in fear.
What they did wrong...
  • Vince Young with an 88 overall coming off a season in which he threw 9 TD's to 17 INT's and had a 71.1 rating. To put that into perspective, Tarvaris Jackson had 9 TD's and 12 INT's with a 70.8 rating, and received a 78 overall. Quit trying to cover up your footprints, EA, Young was a mistake as coverboy of 08, and has yet to prove that he can succeed at the NFL level.
  • I'll probably take a lot of heat for this, but Eli Manning is not deserving of a 93 overall. A measly 56.1 completion percentage combined a 6.3 average yards per catch is hardly impressive. Combined with barely exceeding a 1-to-1 ratio in TD/INT's (23/20), it's hard to give him anything higher than a 90. Let's not forget; Samuel dropped an easy interception, Manning over-threw a wide-open Jacobs, Tyree made a ridiculous catch, and Burress was left uncovered on that final drive.
  • Tom Brady with a 99 throw power rating. I'm not going to say Brady has a weak arm, because he's far from that, but to say he can throw it harder than anyone in the league, much less all-time, is quite a stretch.
  • Tony Romo with an 80 awareness. The guy has been phenominal the past two seasons, with last season throwing 36 TD's, 64.4% completions, 8.1 average yards-per-catch, and a 97.4 rating, it would seem wrong to say this guy can't "read the field". Sure, he has problems in the post-season, but if that's the case, he should lack in "composure" (a stat Madden should invent if they haven't already).
  • An 84 seems a bit high for Matt Shaub. The man did virtually nothing without Andre Johnson in the lineup, and although I hate docking the quarterback for having a great wide receiver, I'm allowing myself to do so in this instance. Had Shaub proven he can distribute the ball around, I'd think otherwise.
  • Marc Bulger should not be creeping up on 90 overall. Yes, he got injured, but he didn't exactly start great last year, and failed to recover. 06 couldn't seem farther away.
  • David Garrard with such a low awareness, and David Garrard with such a high speed. Garrard threw an incredible 3 INT's all season last year; a feat very few QB's have ever accomplished. I'd say he's got what it takes to at least hit 85. And he's known for not being too nimble on his feet, although he had a great run against Pittsburgh in the playoffs, that's no reason to shoot his rating over a 75.
I could sit around and nit-pick until I'm blue in the face about these ratings, but I'm going to leave the rest to the imagination. Obviously, they did a lot more right than I had expanded upon, but I wanted to stir the pot a bit and grab some guys that might create contraversy. Regardless, I'll see you next time for the running backs.

Re: Madden 09 Ratings Ratings - QB

good read. I agree about the 99 throwing power for Brady. He's got an arm but a 99 seems rather high

Good article. Very nice breakdowns. Vince Young has a overrated rating just like in real life. I agree about Brady as well.

I agree with just about everything you said and the Eli Manning rating is absurd

Very good read. You have some very solid points. I have nothing to disagree about.

Eli Manning won the playoffs for the Giants. He became a leader and was unstoppable in the playoffs leading to the superbowl.

Re: Madden 09 Ratings Ratings - QB

The only thing I disagree with is how you try to discredit some things about the SB...what happened,happened...cant IF samuel would have picked that off and what not....cant discredit the guy because Tyree got the catch or Plax ran an incredibly good route and sold the slant and THATS what got him wide open.....Really If you are gonna do that wouldnt you have to take away that INT that Steve Smith gave away?or any other INT that was given away by a receiver?
