Crapcom has been notorious for its greedy practices. But now it appears they want to raise prices on gamers as they feel their record profits arent enough.

``Japanese games are being reconsidered.''Regarding the increase in development costs, he raised the issue that ``the price of the game is too low.' Translated by AI

And you know what, hes right. These companies need to make a lot more money.

Well they’re still charging the previous $60 USD for their games and most everyone else is now charging the current $70 so I guess it was only a matter of time.

This is true. average joe barely scraping by is actually the entitled one here.

Games should be at least double the price, and even though the last two Capcom games I bought at launch full price, didn't fucking work, I am grateful for their greatnessnomnomnom

@girlusocrazy: Considering gamers make fun of and review bomb Nintendo's lower budget games i doubt they want to take that step. Sony has set the standard for what games should look like on modern consoles, and now companies have to pay the price.

You're missing the context behind those remarks:

He's talking about game prices in Japan, not overseas. They're not talking about overseas markets, but only the Japanese market.

The Japanese yen was stable for decades without inflation, so Japanese game prices remained consistent for decades. Unlike the West where inflating currencies led to game prices increasing over the decades, Japanese game prices remained the same since the '90s. But for the first time in decades, the Japanese yen is going through inflation. So they're discussing the possibility of raising Japanese game prices for the first time in nearly 30 years.

Hes talking about any market. Bro isnt gonna just raise the price in Japan, hes gonna raise to $70 in all markets.

Tsujimoto also went on to claim that a slow economy wouldn’t have a big impact on video game prices either: “Just because there’s a recession doesn’t mean you won’t go to the movie theater or go to your favorite artist’s concert. High-quality games will continue to sell,” he said.

Nope. He was speaking as the chairman of CESA, which only regulates the Japanese market. CESA have no control or authority over foreign markets. CESA only have authority over the Japanese market.

You clearly don't understand how economics work. If a currency is inflating, then that means the very opposite of what you're claiming. For every dollar sold overseas, that translates to higher yen revenue back home in Japan. So there's no need to raise overseas prices at all. They could even lower overseas prices and still generate more yen revenue back in Japan. There's absolutely zero reason for them to even want to raise prices in overseas markets.

@mesome713: They're already making more money due to inflation...

  • $60 in 2021 = 6500 yen
  • $60 in 2023 = 8300 yen

For the same dollar price, they're making 30% more yen revenue than they did two years ago. Furthermore:

  • $70 in 2021 = 8000 yen
  • $60 in 2023 = 8300 yen

$60 today is making them more yen than $70 did two years ago!

There's zero reason to increase overseas prices. If anything, that's more reason for them to lower overseas prices, as $60 would make them more money today than $70 did two years ago.

Stop peddling fake news.

@mesome713: It's kinda crazy as an American, to see what Japanese CEOs are paid. $1.5 million a year is a lot of money, but it seems so reasonable next to the $200 million (give or take) that someone like Bobby Kotick brings home.

@mesome713: he's right and they should raise the price to whatever he feels is fair. End of the day, it's the market that decides. Personally I never buy games day 1, still waiting for hogwarts to drop to $30. I was thinking of buying gotham at $17.5 but guess what, it's coming to gamepass. So I'll try it there and if it's good, I'll but it later

So bottom line, whatever price they set doesn't matter to me.

Lol... I can assure Capcom they can raise prices to whatever they'd like and I still won't pay it.

Further, I'd remind them to innovate gameplay and stop pretending that games need to be more expensive to build.

@mesome713: In Japan, the average price for a new AAA release is about 8000 yen, i.e. $53. Due to inflation, Japanese prices are now lower than US prices. He's proposing to raise Japanese prices so they match US prices. The English gaming media is completely ignoring the Japanese economic context to peddle fake news.

My thoughts were this exactly. It is, as you said, only a matter of time before Capcom joined all the rest. And I don't blame them. We've been getting great content from them that I wouldn't be opposed to their price increase. As long as developers are pumping out quality, it shouldn't be an issue.

He's wrong. The development costs are too high.

I don't pay 70 bucks for games, nor do I pay 200 bucks for fighting games. Just because they put in their games extra hair animations, super ultra lighting and VA by whatever hollywood actor is popular atm, I will not start paying 90 bucks for games either.

Forspoken flop of the year

Instead Square Enix will learn nothing and will simply go "oh it's because people want NFT in their games now. Forspoken's issue was that it didn't have NFT"

At that point, might as well go out in the real world.
