Current gen plus 720p

is there any point to owning a 720p television and a ps4 or does it defeat the entire purpose. Most of these games are the same as last gen just 1080p and higher framerates which is nicer for sure but it's not like last gen couldn't run games at this resolution either. Most of the framerate stuff is noticeable to the naked eye but it's not exactly what I would say necessary or earth shattering. One thing that bugged me about last gen was that there were still jaggies and framerate popups and weak blurry textures in spots. especially early on games were terrible with the blur effect. but the latest games are pretty good. Still own a 720p television though and am trying to hold off spending money.

Sony gets you either way. You have to buy a new TV to really enjoy this gen?

A lot of ps4 games are coming to ps3 so regardless of what to you have it will make sense to have a ps4. Even if for some odd reason you still game on a tube.

I still have the 360 and game on th at as much as anything because there is nothing out on ps4 right now worth playing. still having more fun with gta v than anything. It's a much more complete game than infamous. Also what happened to the promise that this new gen was supposed to streamline everything and not have limits. last gen developers excuse was that th e hardware was limiting. I'm holding them to that . If a bad game is released this gen there is no other reason except they are a bad developer.

Playing trials fusion on 360 and ps4 you can still notice the difference even at 720p though as far as the detailed textures and framerates.

Still though it's all the same hardware. There is no reason why they should have to b uild a game from the ground up and take 3 steps back to take a step forward this gen. infamous second son basically is that. It took all last gen to get all the proper phsyics in play until end of gen we actually have fully functioning physics. Now we have to do ths all over again? There is no excuse except bad development and milkage by developers.

I was messing around with Second son the other night. Got stuck in some weird dimension messing with the physics. CArs when you shoot them just stop and act dead. GTA 5 is last gen and has more advanced physics and AI.

There was never any point to buy a 720p TV honestly. Companies just made them for people that wanted to save a few bucks KNOWING they would come back eventually.

I'm talking PS2/Xbox/Gamecube days I was rocking a 1080i at the very least. By the time the PS360Wii generation started, it was easy to get progressive scan on 1080.

Now we are in the PS4/Xbone/Wii U days...honestly so happy I trusted my research back then and didn't fall for those stupid 720p models or lousy 60hz models.

it was given to me for free. I would have bought a 1080 p tv myself but this was inherited and it was free. it lasted me all through last gen. still don't want to spend $500 or whatever it is for a new tv. is there a huge difference? I have 360 and ps4 here and playing trials fusion on both I can notice the difference in textures and framerates. framerates not so m uch. there are still drops on the ps4 w hich is weird. but even at 720p you can notice the difference. im guessing 1080p looks that much sharper. same textures though. might actually have better framerates at the lower resolution.

Turns out that the PS4 isn't as powerful as you thought it was. But yeah, you can stick with 720p, but definitely look forward for a 1080p screen, it's seriously worth it. And not just for games, for movies/shows also.

I don't think there is a huge difference but i'm not a massive fanboy. I got a ps4 because it's nice and does everything I want. last gen was still pretty good though especially at the end. Some of the earlier games were crap. always wished last gen was a bit sharper without the jaggies and screen tearing though. but I don't get jaggies on the ps4 even at 720p. it just doesn't look as eye popping or beautiful as it could I guess. The ps4 to me is what last gen should have been to me. It just looks right everything. There aren't weak textures or pop In or that blur effect or the stuff developers used to do to mask some of the weak hardware. Still annoys me that second son comes out and the physics and AI are 3 steps back though. Game looks nice. Plays like a hollow piece of crap. So in that regard last gen Is still better if gameplay and the actual game means anything to you. So now I have wait all this gen for these games to add features we already had in last gen games as developers milk us all over again.

Last gen there was always some excuse. Every developer basically said and promised this gen there were to be no limits as far as hardware. They are already full of shit.

why bother with 720 when 1080 TV's are the same price?

It was free. I had it all of last gen. when It was given to me I knew it would be outdated and wanted to get a 1080p tv but it was free. so now I have to buy a 1080p tv anyways. just delayed the inevitable.

I don't know if I should just keep this and be happy though. it was free and if there isn't a huge difference why bother. its just resolution. I am kind of missing a huge benefit of current gen though where you can run games at 1080p and they actually look good vs last gen you still had low res textures so it didn't matter.

Why do you own a 720p tv? They don't even make those anymore. That tv must be 15 years old I've had a 1080 set since 2005.

I agree. there are no games out yet. im going to wait. once mlb the show comes out for ps4 I might splurge but its not worth it right now. If people are that whatever because I have 720p like they are better than me or something that is pretty funny.

I may go buy an old tube tv and carry it home because the gas would be too expensive and flip people off as they drifve by like you think you are better than me just for the hell of it.

I got my first HDTV in July 2005 so I could prepared for the HD gen. It was a 23 inch LCD and supported 720p/1080i. It satisfied my needs for last gen as most games barely supported 720p anyway. Plus I game in my bedroom and sit close to it so the small size was not an issue.

I recently got a new 32 inch 1080p LED HDTV last Christmas 2013. I am very happy with it and can see it lasting the entire gen no problem as PS4 games are 1080p and xbone games struggle with 720p.

I will be buying a huge 4K TV in 5+ years from now whenever the PS5 comes out. This has been working out great for me so far. You have no excuse to not own a 1080p HDTV. They are very cheap right now.

The new consoles offer more than just resolution bumps for games. You'll definitely notice the improvement in graphics quality, even on your 720p TV.

If you're happy with your current picture quality, I say pick a new console up as soon as a game is out that you want. If you hate your current TV, get a new one first, then splurge on the console.

They were good for people that wanted small secondary TV's, small 1080p sets were rare and expensive. Anyone who bought a big 720p set is a fool though.

Small 720p TV's are still useful, as PS3, and 360 games will look the best on them. If I had more room I would still have mine connected.

If you're fine with it, then no. Games will still look good in 720p, due to a number of reasons. That being said, a nice 1080p TV will do wonders.

For a PS3/Xbox 360 a smaller sized 720p TV would look the best. But come on, for this generation it has to be 1080p or GTFO.

just was messing around since i have 23 inch monitor and had my ps4 r unning 1080p vs my 32 inch 720p tv. Just trying to see what the difference is between 1080p, 1080i and 720p. Switching resolutions i can't notice any difference. 1080i is still the same resolution as 1080p but it's interlaced so the response time isnt going to be as good and some flicker i guess but i can't notice any d ifference at all. I think im just going to stick with this tv. both my monitor and tv are 60ms refresh. my tv is 8ms response time. my monitor is 7ms looking at specs. Ive heard 4ms is quicker as far as ghosting and what not but there is no difference to me to the naked eye. The monitor is 23 inches vs 32 so it looks a tiny bit sharper i guess but there is no difference that i can notice even on a smaller screen.

this tv is older but 720p, 1080i 60ms refresh rate and 8ms response times still seems pretty standard. It's a 32 inch panasonic tv so its fine. I guess i could spend $500 on a nicer 1080p tv with faster response time but the difference is going to be so small it will be ridiculous. I dont like huge tvs anyways. 32 is good. If i get a new tv it would probably be 40. Thats what i would have bought if i got a tv vs this being given to me. Dont think it is worth it. Just my two cents after messing around.

Resolution all depends on viewing distance.

720p is more than sufficient if you have a less than 42" television and are sitting relatively close to it (i.e. in a smaller room rather than the "home theatre").

I own a 42" 720p Panasonic Viera plasma. It's a gorgeous TV to play games on (the blacks and colour are outstanding) and we have it in a fairly small room (the apartment we currently live in is quite small). If we move into a bigger place with a larger living room area, I can guarantee you that we would replace the TV and the plasma would be moved to the man cave for a dedicated gaming screen.

I sit about 4-6 feet away. I'm testing it with second son and the graphics look good either way. I can't notice any difference between 720p, 1080i or 1080p on a smaller screen. It's a panasonic tv so its a nice tv. I feel like i would be wasting money for not that big a difference.

The only difference i noticed was when i set to 1080i and stand in one place in second son and pan the camera over the ground there is a slight flicker with 1080i. The ps4 was set to automatic and was defaulting to 1080i i think. since i switched it to 720p the image looks more crisp. maybe slightly softer at 720p. There is very little difference though. image quality when standing still 1080i vs 1080p is going to be the same im guessing. its more how it scans so when its in motion. response time has something to do with that too im guessing.

i just tested again b etween 1080i and 720p and there was no flicker when panning and no difference at all. there is no difference lol. i put it on my monitor and 1080p and the game looks the same too. just smaller screen. it might in spots because of interlaced or progressive but i noticed that flicker once in all my tests. it was a shadow with the lighting that did it at one point but it isnt doing that anymore.

When I entered last gen in 2006 with the 360, I had a Standard definition TV. I could still see easily that the graphics were better than PS2/Xbox. But I don't think I ever owned a 720p TV. My first HDTV was 1080p capable. I hear ya spending money. But man it just slips right through my hands.

Ah a fellow plasma lover; it's a shame so much consumer fear and misinformation led people to LCDs instead. Any company I have over is always astounded by how good my TV looks. I just got the last generation of plasmas panasonic ever will make with the ST60 and I'm loving it.

The ST60 is one of the best Plasma you can get, especially if you consider its price. But the TV does have more input lag, that most gamers would not want. Anything that would require precise timing, like a fighting game, or an online FPS, or even a racing game would be effected by input lag. If you mostly play single player, or games off line, then I wouldn't put too much thought in to it.

I don't know. I keep switching back and forth between 1080i and 720p on my tv and I cant notice a damn bit of difference. As far as a still picture 1080i should be the same as 1080p im guessing. I sort of notice more of a blur when the game is in motion compared to 720p but on a tv that big I don't think the resolution makes a damn bit of difference. I've heard people say 720p looks grainier. im not even seeing that. I guess maybe very very slight but its like the smallest possible difference I could even make mys elf imagine it's even there. I'm going to leave my tv on 720p and be happy. I think the interlaced mode there is a slight bit more of blur with fast movements but I'm probably imagining that too.

It's a Panasonic tv and a good brand and I think that means more than anything. 480 vs 720 is a big difference. I notice that. I think at hd resolutions there is only so much that is noticeable to the naked eye. on a bigger tv it might make a difference for sure. but even still a smaller tv at 720p is going to look just as good as a big tv at 1080p.

Because your human. You will not see a difference. When there is a big resolution jump like really big you will see a difference. If anyone says they can see the difference they are lying.

you def need a 1080p tv with the x1 and ps4 to see any diffrence over last gen.

We got our first LCD HDTV in 2003. All were 720p and HDMI wasn't even standard yet. If you wanted HD, you used RGB component.

You definitely need a 1080p tv to see the full effects.

This gen is not the same as last one with higher res. Look at BF4: higher res, higher framerate, higher player count, better textures, more particles, and better graphics overall. And it's a launch, cross generation, game.

Most games run at native 1080p, though, so you should invest on a full HD TV to fully enjoy them.

my friend who own a ps3 doesnt even use a hdmi cable to connect his console to his 1080p tv, u are not as bad as him but still pretty lame. get a 1080p tv brah

I remember having this argument last gen with the PS3 and the Bluray player. Not a damn one had a 1080 p TV but everyone just had to brag about watching Blurays. It kinda defeats the purpose.

There's more to image quality than pixels. Most people don't know what they are talking about in this regard.

I had an SDTV at the start of last gen. Only when moving to an HDTV later did I know how much I was missing out on.

You can get a 40" Sony 1080p for $400-500 if you shop around.

A good 720p plasma hdtv is going to look better than some cheap edge lit led set. It's about the quality of the display not just 720p vs 1080p. If your playing on console most of the games are under 1080p any way.
